IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Concern for the environment is growing and more and more people are choosing to recycle. But some people suggest that recycling is not enough. They believe we need to consume less.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Environmental destruction is growing rapidly in recent days. More people are getting concerned. Awareness is also, fortunately, increasing gradually. Increased engagement is attracting differing opinions about the solutions to the deterioration.

Recycling has become the number one choice for environmental conservation nowadays. People are recycling all sorts of products. Such as, instead of throwing plastic bottles in oceans or rivers, many are turning them into flower pots. A lot of people are refusing the usage of polythene bags. They are using jute bags instead. rejecting plastic straws are a common supporting topic. All of these practices are noteworthy. But, in my opinion, this is not enough. Just recycling is not nearly enough. Environmental decay is caused not only by natural causes but also by manmade issues. In order to propagate this worsening we need to consum less.

Even though more and more people are adopting recycling, the majority still choose to release toxic waste in the nature. The oceans and rivers are sill filled with trash that are bad for the water. People are still letting industrial chemical wastes out into the air and the water. We need to consume less energy. Overusage of air conditioners, factory chimneys, coal mines are consuming huge energy and producing toxins. From my own experience, I have seen my family members not turn off electrical appliances after they're don working with them. These small unconscious choices are also detremental to our environment.

One solution to this could be community awarenes. A group of people, such as a neighbourhood, can sit together and develop green houses to emit green house gases. We can make habits out of everyday small chores, for example, not throwing trash in the street or in the open water. We also need to put chains on using fossil fuels. Overconsuming them leaves the future generation at a risk of not getting them at all.

In conclusion, I agree that recycling is an extremely important act in conserving our environment; but it is simply not enough. As a community, we need to be considerable of our future generation and not over use the current resources. This planet is our home, we need to take care of it together.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You give a clear overall opinion that recycling matters but is insufficient, and you discuss both recycling and reducing consumption. Examples such as reusing bottles, choosing jute bags, and switching off appliances make the topic relevant. However, the discussion of the view that recycling is enough is mostly a list of practices rather than an explanation of why people support it or what benefits it achieves. The case for consuming less is more developed, but some claims—such as the link between air conditioners, energy use and environmental harm—would benefit from clearer explanation. Your proposed solutions are relevant, though “develop green houses to emit green house gases” appears to contradict your argument. Develop each view more evenly and clarify this example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall structure: an introduction, paragraphs on recycling and consumption, a solutions paragraph, and a conclusion. The position is easy to identify, and transitions such as “Even though,” “One solution,” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “In order to propagate this worsening” does not clearly connect the preceding point to the proposed solution, and the paragraph beginning “One solution” shifts from community awareness to fossil fuels without a clear link. The sentence fragment “Such as, instead of throwing…” also interrupts the flow. Use complete sentences and make the relationship between each example and its main point explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of environmental vocabulary, including “toxic waste,” “fossil fuels,” “conservation,” and “future generation.” These terms help communicate the subject, and there are attempts at more formal phrasing. However, noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision, including “consum,” “sill,” “detremental,” and “awarenes.” Some collocations are also unnatural or confusing: “propagate this worsening,” “put chains on using fossil fuels,” and “be considerable of our future generation.” Choose more conventional expressions and check spelling carefully. Repetition of “environmental” and “recycling” is understandable, but using accurate alternatives such as “pollution,” “resource use,” or “waste reduction” would add flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including the concessive opening “Even though more and more people are adopting recycling…” and the conditional “If…”-style reasoning in your examples. Most ideas remain understandable, but there are some errors in sentence formation, agreement, and punctuation. “Such as, instead of throwing…” is a fragment, while “the oceans and rivers are … filled with trash that are bad” has a mismatch between “trash” and “are.” In “rejecting plastic straws are a common supporting topic,” the subject and verb do not agree. There are also missing spaces after full stops and inconsistent capitalisation. Practise complete sentence structures, subject–verb agreement, and proofreading punctuation to make your varied sentences more controlled.
