IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Concern for the environment is growing and more and more people are choosing to recycle. But some people suggest that recycling is not enough. They believe we need to consume less.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Our world is facing different types of hazard due to our mistreatement on the environement. It is our prime responsbility to recover our surrounding environment by choosing options in between recycling and comsumption. People belive that we can solve it by more recycling or by less comsumption. In my own opinion, both recyling and consumtion can be done in an optimized way so that people and enviroment could get the benifit out of it.
Recycling wastes is an important approach to save the environment. By recycling properly, we can reduce the amount of air, water and soil pollution. For example, tons of factory and municipal wastes are dumped at the Savar all over the year. As a result, a mountain of waste is pilled up on the ground, and methane gas is produced that pollutes the overall local area. Government takes the initiative to recycle the waste and converts it to pitch so that it can be used for the road construction. Some scientist are also using this recyle wates to produce oil like octane, that can be used as fuel in the vechicles.
If we reduce our consumption, it could be an alternative way to tackle the environmental concern. By identifying what items we need to reduce, we can easily make a way out of it. The source of major waste comes from household and industries. For instance, by optimizaing our daily consumes from our daily grocerry in household, or by using less amount pesticides in agriculture, or using a less amount garments chemicals in the garments sector, will optimize the pollution level. It could be better for environment and sorroundings.
In conclusion, two major steps have been discussed to tackle the environement from the harmful pollution. Both recyling and consumtion can be done in a optimized way so that people and enviroment can get benifit out of it. Though It can be a major challenge for us, but I think it is not impossible if public want.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address both views by discussing recycling and reducing consumption, and your conclusion gives a position that both approaches should be used. The examples about waste near Savar, road construction, and household or industrial pollution make the discussion relevant. However, the position is not fully clear: the introduction says both can be optimised, but the essay does not explain whether you consider reduced consumption more important, or how the two approaches should work together. Some points are also under-developed. For example, the claim that recycling waste can produce fuel is mentioned without explaining its environmental benefits or limitations. Develop each view with clearer reasoning and make your own judgement more explicit throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two approaches, and a conclusion. This helps the reader follow the main topics. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes unclear, and links between ideas can feel mechanical. In the recycling paragraph, the move from pollution to methane, road material, and fuel would be easier to follow if you explained how each example supports the argument. The consumption paragraph lists several possible reductions but does not organise them into a clear explanation. Phrases such as “For example,” “For instance,” and “In conclusion” provide basic signposting, but clearer references and more explicit cause-and-effect links would improve cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “recycling,” “pollution,” “municipal wastes,” “pesticides,” and “agriculture,” so the reader can understand the subject. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “road construction” and “methane gas.” However, spelling errors are frequent and sometimes make reading difficult, including “mistreatement,” “environement,” “comsumption,” and “recyling.” Some word choices and collocations are also inaccurate or unclear, such as “recover our surrounding environment,” “daily consumes,” and “recycle wastes.” Aim for accurate, natural phrases and check spelling carefully. A more varied and precise vocabulary would help you explain environmental impacts and solutions without relying on repeated forms of “environment” and “waste.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including conditional structures such as “If we reduce our consumption, it could be an alternative way” and a relative clause in “wastes … that pollutes the overall local area.” These attempts show some range, but control is inconsistent. For example, “Government takes the initiative” needs an article or plural subject, while “Some scientist are” has a subject–verb agreement error. The long sentence beginning “For instance, by optimizing…” does not form a complete, well-controlled structure, and “Though it can be a major challenge for us, but…” combines conjunctions incorrectly. Work on complete sentence patterns, agreement, articles, and punctuation, while keeping complex sentences manageable.
