IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Concern for the environment is growing and more and more people are choosing to recycle. But some people suggest that recycling is not enough. They believe we need to consume less.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Because of the increasing concern about the nature, number of people who are going in favour of recycling are increasing. Meanwhile, another group of people in this context are found suggesting to keep consumption limited along with choosing to recycle.
Recycling can be defined as the process of reuse or repeated use of things untill the utility of that product becomes zero. For example, inspite of throwing away our old and used things in the environment, we can give away those to the poor people. They can use them for a while and again can use those for some other purposes, and not throwing them in the nature very often. In this process the lifespan of a product can be made longer and the environment can be kept away from pollution for longer time.
However, along with recycling there is another view to save the environment from pollution is to consume less. Less consumption can be explained as the process of using less product for our verious needs. consuming less can be helpful for the environment through both the production side and consumption side. Less consumption means less demand for product, which leads to a less number of production and resulting less things from the environment are taken to produce those things. On the other hand, if we consume less, we would have less number of residuals or waste to be thrown away in the environment. In this process, lower number of consumption can help conserving the environment in two directions.
According to my point of view, I put myself in the second group of people whose aim is to consume less. Because, through consuming less, I would produce less waste for the environment. Besides, as I have less product for consumption, it would help me using a product for a longer time which promotes recycle as well.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both views and state a clear preference for consuming less, so the response stays relevant to the question. The recycling paragraph explains how reusing or donating items can extend their useful life, while the next paragraph gives two reasons why lower consumption may reduce environmental harm: less production and less waste. These are relevant points, but the discussion is uneven: recycling is mainly illustrated through giving old goods to poorer people, rather than examining recycling systems or its limitations. Your opinion is also brief; the final paragraph would be more convincing if it explained why reducing consumption should take priority while acknowledging that recycling remains useful.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a concluding personal position. This makes the main line of argument easy to follow. You also use signposting such as “However,” “On the other hand,” and “According to my point of view.” At times, though, connections feel mechanical or the reference is unclear. For example, “In this process” is repeated to introduce consequences, and “those things” in the production discussion could refer more precisely to products or resources. The conclusion introduces the link between consuming less and recycling, but does not fully develop it. Use more varied transitions and clearer references to strengthen progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “recycling,” “consumption,” “production,” “pollution,” and “waste,” and attempt less common expressions such as “lifespan” and “residuals.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, which limits precision: “concern about the nature,” “going in favour of recycling,” and “a less number of production” do not sound natural in this context. There are also spelling and form errors, including “untill,” “inspite,” and “verious.” Aim for accurate, natural combinations such as “concern about the environment,” “support recycling,” and “a lower level of production.” This would make your meaning more fluent and precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including cause-and-effect structures such as “Less consumption means less demand for product, which leads to…” and conditional phrasing such as “if we consume less.” The overall meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “number of people … are increasing” has a subject–verb agreement problem, and “another view … is to consume less” is awkwardly constructed. The sentence beginning “Because, through consuming less…” is a fragment, while “consuming less can be helpful” needs consistent capitalization after the full stop. Review articles and plural forms too, as in “less number of residuals.” More accurate sentence construction would help you express the ideas with greater control.
