IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Concern for the environment is growing and more and more people are choosing to recycle. But some people suggest that recycling is not enough. They believe we need to consume less.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Recycling of wastes is significant to control the environmental pollution. But it can't reduce environmental concern on its own. I think recycling and less consumption are both equally important to address environmental problems and to make them less concerning.
Waste recycling helps to reduce the quantity of wastes thrown to disposal sites and ensures the protection of natural resources. Recycling involves separation of reusable materials from wastes, which are then subjected to manufacture other products . This practice decreases the disposal of waste materials to a reasonable extent, which results in less environmental pollution, keeps the environment clean and keeps the society less vulnerable from communicable diseases. For example, water bottles can be recycled to manufacture new bottles which can be reused as original ones, eliminating the need for disposal. In addition, recycle of waste helps to decrease the consumption of natural wastes by reusing them again and again. For example, paper can be recycle and reused for several times, which helps in protection of trees. Recycling aids to make the reproduction works more economic as it requires less money in comparison to production from original state that involves industrial processings.
On the other hand ,waste reduction is equally pivotal as it decreases the waste production at the source and decreases the pollution resulting from waste management process. Reduction at point source is very effective way because it decreases the quantity of wastes at source itself and makes the entire waste management process easier and economic. If large wastes are thrown in collection containers exceeding their volume, the wastes may produce bad smell and attract flies , mosquitoes, etc resulting in spread of diseases like dengue fever, malaria. Moreover, the reduction practice helps in effective utilization of landfill sites by reducing the wastes volume.
So, both the waste reduction and recycle are equally important.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both views and state a clear position: recycling and reducing consumption are “both equally important.” The body paragraphs give relevant reasons, including conserving resources through recycling and reducing waste at its source, and examples such as reusing bottles and paper help illustrate these points. However, the discussion is uneven: the recycling paragraph is more fully explained, while the case for consuming less focuses mainly on waste collection, landfill capacity and disease. The task is specifically about consuming less, so explain more directly how reducing purchases or using fewer materials lowers resource extraction, manufacturing and emissions. Your conclusion restates your view but does not draw together the main reasons. More balanced development would make the response more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for recycling, one for waste reduction, and a brief conclusion. The progression from the benefits of recycling to the case for reducing waste is easy to follow, and examples generally appear beside the ideas they support. Some linking is mechanical, however, with repeated patterns such as “For example,” “In addition,” and “On the other hand.” The relationship between recycling and reduced consumption could also be made clearer; at times the discussion shifts from consumption to waste management without explicitly connecting them. Use a wider range of transitions and clearer referencing, and develop the conclusion so it synthesises the two arguments rather than simply repeating the position.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “natural resources,” “disposal sites,” “landfill sites,” and “waste management.” Some attempts at more formal or less common wording, such as “pivotal” and “vulnerable,” show ambition, but several choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “environmental concern” does not fit the intended meaning, “natural wastes” appears to mean natural resources, and “reproduction works” is unclear in context. There are also word-form and spelling errors, including “recycle” where “recycled” is needed and “processings.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding the main points, but they reduce precision. Prefer familiar, accurate collocations and check word forms when editing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses with “which,” “because,” and “if,” and the main meaning is generally clear. Some grammatical errors remain. For example, “materials … subjected to manufacture” needs a grammatical construction such as “materials … used to manufacture,” while “paper can be recycle” has an incorrect verb form. The sentence beginning “Reduction at point source” is missing an article, and “the wastes may produce bad smell” has problems with article use and number. Punctuation is also inconsistent, as in “On the other hand ,waste reduction” and the spacing around commas. Review articles, verb forms, and sentence punctuation, while retaining the complex structures you already attempt.
