Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the modern world, health of our environment is detoriating day by day. Many people believe that recycling waste will help to save it. However, some believe that only recycling is not sufficient, we should focus on consume less to protect environment. In my opinion, recycling and consuming less both are equally important.

On the one hand, recycling is an effective way to protect our nature. Many materials, such as paper, plastic, glass, metals can be used again instead of throwing away. This helps to control amount of rubbish from going landfills and saves natural resources. For example, paper is made form trees, so recycling paper is reduces need of trees. Furthermore, recycling can reduce pollution and industrial waste and saves energy.

On the other hand, recycling alone is not enough contribution to protect our environment. We should also take care of consuming. If we consume products than less waste will be produced. Moreover, using many electronic items, clothes and plastic products need more raw material and energy and causes pollution. For instance, people tend to buy new model of phone even there are only few features have changed. It requires valuable raw materials, large amount of energy and water.

I strongly believe that both actions should be done together so that we can see the difference. Recycling and consuming both can have greater impact on protecting environment. People should avoid unnecessary shopping, use reusable bags and bottles, and repair damaged items instead of replacing them immediately.

In conclusion, recycling is a useful method of reducing waste and saving resources, but it cannot completely solve environmental problems. I believe that consuming less is equally important and should be encouraged alongside recycling to create a cleaner and more sustainable future.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both views and state a consistent position: recycling and consuming less are “both equally important.” The response gives relevant support, including the reuse of materials and the example of replacing phones for only a few new features, and the conclusion reinforces your opinion. This meets the task well overall. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained: for example, you mention that recycling reduces pollution and industrial waste, but do not show how or give a specific illustration. The discussion of consuming less is somewhat more developed than the recycling side. To strengthen the response, explain the consequences of each action in more depth and make the comparison between their roles clearer.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, your position, and a conclusion. The progression is easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” help readers navigate the argument. This is a coherent arrangement, though some linking is mechanical and ideas within paragraphs could connect more smoothly. For instance, the recycling paragraph moves from materials to landfills, trees, pollution, and energy without developing the relationships between these points. The sentence beginning “I strongly believe” also repeats the position already stated in the introduction. Use more varied transitions and connect each example explicitly to the claim it supports.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “natural resources,” “raw material,” “reusable,” and “sustainable future,” and the meaning is generally clear. There is some attempt to use more specific environmental language, but inaccurate word forms, spelling, and collocations are noticeable and limit precision. Examples include “detoriating,” “consume products than less,” “made form trees,” and “greater impact on protecting environment.” Some expressions are also broad, such as “protect our nature.” Aim to learn vocabulary in accurate phrases and check spelling and word forms during revision. More precise choices would make the argument sound more natural and help you express environmental effects without relying on general wording.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional structure in “If we consume products than less waste will be produced” and a relative clause in “items … which … need more raw material.” The overall meaning remains understandable, but errors in sentence construction, agreement, articles, and verb forms occur across the response. For example, “recycling paper is reduces need of trees” combines incompatible verb forms, while “using many electronic items … need … and causes” has a subject–verb agreement problem. The sentence about phones also lacks a complete clause after “even.” Practise building accurate complex sentences and check that each subject has a matching verb; also review articles and punctuation around clauses.
