Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
There is a growing concern about environment and the impact of recycling and consumption on it. Some people argue that only recycling is not enough, we need to consume less. This essay suggests that although recycling is important for the environment, less consumption may reduce wastage as well as river pollution.
Recycling products and it's practices play an important role in environmental discussion. Reusing products helps people to utilize it in various ways. As a result, people may not need to buy new products because they can reuse the old products according to their needs. For instance, I do not waste my expired makeup, instead I use them in my paintings. Therefore, I do not need to buy new colors frequently. However, even if we reuse the products, eventually these become wastage and harmful for the environment.
Less consumption of products may contribute to producing less waste. This is particularly relevant when we buy more products than our needs. The extra products eventually get wasted and dumped into the rivers at the end. As a result, rivers are getting polluted effecting water and fish, because all products such as plastics do not melt in the water and become harmful material for the fishes. For example, the Buriganga river in Dhaka is considered as a dead river and it happened because of excessive waste dumping. Therefore, less consumption can work as a precaution to produce less wastage and river pollution.
In conclusion, I believe recycling is essential for reducing environmental pollution but less consumption may a play more important role in making less wastage and protect river from pollution.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both views and state a clear position: recycling is important, but consuming less can have a greater preventive effect. The examples of reusing expired makeup and pollution in the Buriganga River make the discussion relevant and help explain your reasoning. However, the recycling view is developed mainly through reuse, rather than explaining recycling itself or its limitations in detail. The claim that products are eventually dumped into rivers is also broad and would benefit from a clearer explanation or evidence. Your conclusion restates your opinion, but the comparison between the two approaches could be more decisive. Develop each side with a specific explanation of how it reduces environmental harm and why you consider one more effective.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two approaches, and a conclusion. Ideas generally progress logically, and linking expressions such as “As a result,” “However,” and “For example” help show relationships between claims and examples. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and also shows some features of stronger progression. At times, though, the links feel repetitive or mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “Therefore” to close points. Some references are not fully clear, as in “eventually these become wastage,” where the reader must infer what “these” refers to. Use more varied transitions and make references explicit, while ensuring each paragraph develops one central point in a clear sequence.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “recycling,” “wastage,” “polluted,” and “excessive waste dumping,” so the main ideas are understandable. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “precaution” and “environmental pollution.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unnatural. “Concern about environment” needs a more natural expression, while “products do not melt in the water” does not accurately describe plastic pollution. Repetition of “products,” “waste,” and “less” also limits flexibility. Build a wider set of precise environmental terms and check how words combine in context; for example, describe plastic as “does not biodegrade” rather than saying it does not melt.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses beginning with “although,” “because,” and “when.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “it's practices” should be “its practices,” and “I use them” does not agree with the singular “makeup.” The sentence “Some people argue that only recycling is not enough, we need to consume less” joins two independent clauses with a comma; use a full stop, semicolon, or conjunction. In the conclusion, “may a play” and “making less wastage and protect” show errors in verb structure and parallelism. Review possessives, agreement, and sentence boundaries, and proofread verb forms in longer sentences.
