Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The most discussed topic among people these days is how can we recover the impact of our activities on the environment. One group of people supports the idea that only recycling certain materials is enough to save the environment. On the other hand, the other group belives that just recyling will not help, they think that we have to go beyond that. They think decline in the consumptions of the harmful materials is also very important in this regard. In my opinion, we can do all the necessary efforts that can help to protect the environment. Recyling is just one aspect but emitting harmful materials from our daily life usage will also make a signficant change.

The people who support the idea of recycling are still thinking about good cause. For example, recycling the plastic and use it again over the time will prevent the plastic pollution. But only recyling without decreasing our consumer need will only have very little impact. Because as the demand is continue to increase there will be more hazardous material produced to meet the demand. Therefore, recyling won't be enough in this case.

However, those who support the idea of consuming less along with recycling are going to make better impact on the environment. For example, consuming less plastic bags and shifting towards paper bags will prevent the addition o more plastic to already existing bulk of the plastic. Here, more recycling of existing plastic and more usage of paper bags will create less demand for plastic and therefore will help to save the environment.

In my opinion, even small steps that can somehow help in saving the envionment are worthy, rather it is recyling or less consumption. At individual level they will have less impact but togather they are going to pose much more positive impact.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and give a clear overall position: recycling is useful, but reducing consumption also matters, and individual actions can work together. The examples of reusing plastic and choosing paper bags are relevant and help explain the discussion. However, the two sides are not developed equally: the first view is presented mainly to show why recycling alone is insufficient, rather than explaining fully why people consider recycling an adequate response. Some claims, such as paper bags preventing environmental harm, would benefit from qualification or support because their impact is not explained. To strengthen the response, develop the reasoning behind each view and make your own position more precise about how recycling and reduced consumption should be combined.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on recycling, a paragraph on consuming less, and a conclusion. Linking phrases such as “On the other hand,” “For example,” and “Therefore” help readers follow the argument. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. In the first body paragraph, “But only recycling without decreasing our consumer need…” follows the example without clearly distinguishing the supporters’ view from your evaluation. The conclusion also repeats the idea of combining actions rather than drawing together the reasons discussed. Improve progression by making each paragraph’s main point explicit, using references such as “this approach” only when their meaning is clear, and linking examples directly to the claim they support.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “recycling,” “plastic pollution,” “hazardous material,” and “demand,” and you attempt some less common expressions such as “significant change.” This gives you enough language to communicate the main ideas. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “recover the impact,” “consumer need,” “make better impact,” and “addition o more plastic.” Spelling errors such as “belives,” “recyling,” “signficant,” and “envionment” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural environmental collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, use “reduce the environmental impact,” “consumer demand,” and “have a greater impact.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mixture of simple and complex forms, including a conditional structure in “as the demand is continue to increase” and a contrast clause beginning “Although” is not attempted, but you do use “On the other hand” to frame contrast. Most of the meaning remains understandable, though some grammatical errors occur. Examples include the question-like word order in “how can we recover,” the incorrect verb pattern “is continue to increase,” and the sentence fragment “Because as the demand…” after a full stop. There are also problems with articles, plurals, and agreement, as in “the consumptions” and “they are going to pose.” Practise accurate subordinate clauses and verb forms, and review sentence boundaries so that reasons are joined to complete main clauses.
