IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Concern for the environment is growing and more and more people are choosing to recycle. But some people suggest that recycling is not enough. They believe we need to consume less.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Nowadays there are huge environmental changes happened like climate has changed and the temperature rises. These changes are because of global gases, plastic waste and pollution.
People are choosing recycling because if world population is huge and there are numerous garbage of plastic and people think if they recycle these product then we can slow down the environments changes. In Pakistan people threw garbage everywhere that is not a good thing. Garbage is thrown in oceans, lakes and rivers that destroys the lives of animals that live in water and clean water becomes dirty because of it. Numbers of animals decreasing day by day.If we recycle then garbage is less and we can use them in multiple ways like if a person buy water bottle daily and after drinking he threw away then pollution increases and if he doesn't threw and use it for daily basis to drink water from that bottle is essential.
On the other hand people choose to consume less then relying only on recycling. It is difficult because we can't cut off our daily needs and requirements but we can try to use less cars instead we can use buses because in this way we reduces pollution. If everyone drove their own car the pollution increases faster than using buses.
To sum up in my opinion recycling and consuming less is better we need to solve the problem as early as possible because this is a big concern we can't ignore this and take this as your own responsibility.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address both views by discussing recycling and then the idea of consuming less, and your conclusion states that both approaches are needed. The examples of plastic entering rivers and oceans and using buses instead of cars are relevant to the topic. However, the discussion is only partly developed: the recycling paragraph focuses mainly on litter and reusing a bottle, while the case for consuming less is brief and does not explain how reducing consumption could lower waste or resource use. Your position becomes clear in the conclusion, but it is not stated clearly at the outset. Develop each view with a fuller explanation and make your opinion explicit in the introduction.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a paragraph about recycling, a contrasting paragraph about consuming less, and a conclusion. Transitions such as “On the other hand” and “To sum up” help signal these stages. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow because several points are joined into long sentences, particularly the discussion of bottles and pollution. Some links are also unclear, as in “if world population is huge and there are numerous garbage of plastic,” where the relationship between population, recycling, and waste is not fully expressed. Use one main idea per sentence, organise supporting details in a clearer order, and use pronouns and linking phrases that make the relationships between ideas explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “recycling,” “plastic waste,” “pollution,” “oceans,” and “daily needs,” so the reader can understand the subject of your argument. However, the range is limited and some word choices or combinations are inaccurate or repetitive. For example, “global gases” does not clearly identify the emissions you mean, “environments changes” is not a natural phrase, and “numerous garbage” uses an unsuitable form. Repetition of “garbage” and “pollution” also limits precision. Build a wider set of environmental terms and check common collocations and countability; this will help you express causes and effects more accurately without changing your main ideas.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and longer sentence forms, including conditional structures such as “If everyone drove their own car…” and a contrast introduced by “On the other hand.” However, complex sentences are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to make some passages difficult to follow. Examples include “there are huge environmental changes happened,” “the temperature rises,” and “if he doesn't threw and use it,” which show problems with verb forms and sentence construction. There are also agreement errors, as in “we reduces pollution,” and punctuation problems where sentences run together. Practise building accurate sentences with one clear main clause, then add subordinate clauses and check tense, subject–verb agreement, and sentence boundaries.
