Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, the environmental issues like pollution, climate change are increasing rapidly. These issues are also threatening the lives of the people. Therefore, a sufficient number of people argue that recycling is enough to get rid of these problems. While others believed that only recycling is not enough, we must diminish our consumptions for the better results. Both statements have valid arguments. This essay will discuss both views.

On the one hand, recycling is the process of reusing the things again and again. It helps individuals to save money that is constantly waste on the unusual items. Making products from recycled materials takes much less energy than making them from scratch. Low energy demands mean using fewer fuel which helps slowing down the climate change. For instance, many countries have introduced the recycling bins for the better development.

On the other hand, a lot of people held an opinion that we need to consume less as only recycling does not provide much flexibilities. It is more crucial than recycling. For example, substantial portion of the population often buy the extra things even they have the same ones before like many individuals buy clothes that they may have before. Therefore, if we consume less, there is less requirements for recycling that directly affects the society.

In my opinion, I firmly believe that consumption in more important than recycling as it reduces the probabilities for buying unnecessary things that mainly aim for reducing only the things that are primarily for the people.

In conclusion, although recycling is essential. Less consumption is also paramount for the better environment. Therefore, we must encourage less consuming and also enhance the recycling projects.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both views and state a clear preference for reducing consumption, so the response is relevant to the task. The recycling paragraph gives a reason—using recycled materials requires less energy—and the consumption paragraph offers an example involving buying clothes that are already owned. However, the discussion is only partly developed: the claim that recycling helps people “save money” is not clearly connected to the environmental argument, and the example of recycling bins does not explain their impact. Your opinion is also difficult to follow in the sentence beginning “as it reduces the probabilities,” which does not clearly explain how consuming less benefits the environment. Develop each main point with a clearer cause-and-effect explanation and make your position more precise throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, your opinion, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” helps readers follow the discussion, and the ideas generally appear in a logical order. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some of the stronger control associated with a higher level. However, connections between claims are sometimes mechanical or unclear. For example, “Therefore, if we consume less, there is less requirements for recycling” does not clearly establish the intended relationship, and the opinion paragraph is not well linked to the preceding example. Use more precise referencing and explain how each sentence develops the paragraph’s main point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some topic-relevant vocabulary, including “recycled materials,” “energy demands,” “climate change,” and “consumption,” and you attempt more formal expressions such as “paramount.” This gives you enough vocabulary to communicate the general subject. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are noticeably inaccurate, sometimes making the meaning unclear. Examples include “diminish our consumptions,” “provide much flexibilities,” and “the probabilities for buying unnecessary things.” “Waste on the unusual items” also does not express the intended idea naturally. Aim for accurate, natural combinations rather than choosing formal-sounding words that do not fit the context; this will make your arguments clearer and more precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a contrast structure with “While others believed…” and a conditional sentence beginning “if we consume less.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but errors in sentence construction, agreement, articles, and verb forms are frequent enough to affect clarity. For example, “pollution, climate change are increasing” needs a clearer grammatical link, while “a lot of people held an opinion” shifts awkwardly into the past tense. In “there is less requirements,” the verb and noun do not agree, and “although recycling is essential” is left as a sentence fragment before the conclusion continues. Practise building complete sentences and checking agreement and tense, while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
