IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Concern for the environment is growing and more and more people are choosing to recycle. But some people suggest that recycling is not enough. They believe we need to consume less.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience.
Student answer (Band 4.5)
Recycling is a significant aspect of the waste management that is the process doing to the remaining goods after using them. Nowadays, people's concern for the environment is increasing and a lot of people are deciding to recycle. However, certain amount of individuals suggest that people should do something than recycling such as reducing the usage. In this essay, I will explore both these views, and in my opinion, people should consume less while recycling.
Firstly, people should do both recycling and reducing the consumption. The primarily reason for this is recycling waste only is not enough comparing to the amount of waste production. For instance, the human population is increasing rapidly, and as a result, the waste production also increases. According to the famous '3R' concept, there are three ways people can do waste management that are reduce, reuse and recycle. Therefore I suggest people should do these three ways over the recycling.
Secondly, even doing recyling is important than doing nothing.
In conclusion,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
You identify both views and state a position: “people should consume less while recycling.” The point that recycling alone cannot keep pace with rising waste is relevant, and the reference to the “3R” concept gives it some support. However, the discussion is only minimal: the second body paragraph says merely that recycling is “important than doing nothing,” without explaining the benefits of recycling or developing the view that people should consume less. The conclusion is left unfinished, so your final position is not reinforced. The response also falls 85 words short of the required minimum, which limits how fully you can address the task. Develop each side with reasons and a specific example, then complete the conclusion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The response has a recognisable introduction and body paragraphs, and signposts such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “In conclusion” show an attempt to organise the discussion. However, the ideas do not progress coherently: the second paragraph is only one brief sentence, and the conclusion contains no concluding idea. The first body paragraph also moves quickly from population growth to the 3R concept without explaining the connection in detail. As a result, the reader cannot follow a sustained discussion of both views. Build each paragraph around one clear point, explain it, and connect it to an example; use the conclusion to summarise your position rather than leaving it blank.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “waste management,” “recycling,” “consumption,” and “3R concept,” which makes the subject clear. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “people’s concern for the environment.” However, the range is limited by repetition of “recycling,” “waste,” and “people,” and several collocations or word forms are inaccurate: “the process doing to the remaining goods” and “certain amount of individuals” are difficult or unnatural. “Recyling” is also misspelled. Aim for more precise expressions such as “processes used to manage waste,” “some people,” and “reduce consumption,” and vary repeated terms where appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt a mixture of simple and complex sentences, including a relative clause in “the waste management that is the process…” and a cause-and-effect structure in “as a result, the waste production also increases.” These attempts show some range, and the main position is generally understandable. However, errors occur in sentence construction and grammatical forms, for example “the process doing to the remaining goods” and “the primarily reason.” The opening sentence is difficult to parse, and “people should do something than recycling” does not form a clear comparison. Use simpler, complete sentence patterns when unsure, and check articles, word forms, and comparative structures. More accurate control across the response would make your ideas easier to follow.
