Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response attempts to describe the data but fails to address the prompt comprehensively. The instructions mention two charts (parents speaking to children and adults speaking to their own children), yet the analysis of the second chart is fragmented and lacks clarity. The data interpretation is inconsistent; for instance, the claim that Occitan was 1.2 million is inaccurate based on the provided visual data, and the comparison between 'habitual' and 'occasional' speakers is not clearly supported by the labels. To improve, ensure all data points are accurately transcribed and that the relationship between the two charts is clearly explained to provide a complete overview.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the logical progression is hindered by awkward phrasing and some mechanical use of cohesive devices. Phrases like 'At a fleeting glance' and 'Moving ahead' are used somewhat unnaturally. Referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly when discussing the specific languages and their corresponding figures. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider range of linking words more naturally and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus that flows logically into the next.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision required for a higher band. There are instances of unnatural word choices, such as 'calibrated into numbers' and 'highest value is covered by'. The repetition of 'number of adults' makes the writing feel somewhat monotonous. While the student attempts to use specific language names, the lack of variety in reporting verbs and descriptive adjectives limits the score. Incorporating more precise terminology related to data trends would significantly enhance the quality of the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'the number of adults spoke Occitan' (missing 'who') and 'the highest number of adults whose parents spoke them in Occitan language' (awkward prepositional usage). Subject-verb agreement and article usage are inconsistent throughout the text. While the errors do not completely prevent understanding, they are frequent enough to limit the score. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for missing prepositions would be beneficial.
