The charts below show the number of French adults whose parents spoke a French regional language to them when they were children and the number who speak a French regional language to their own children.

Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The given bar chart depicts the number of adults whose parents would speak five different regional languages to them in childhood, while the other chart illustrates the number of adults who speak these regional French languages to their own children.

Overall, it is clear that adults used to speak both occasionally and habitually Alsatian, Occitan and Breton with children more often as compared to Creole and Corsican which were spoken by far fewer number of adults. A similar trend can be seen in the second chart of those adults who speak these regional languages with their children.

In detail, almost 600 thousand adults used to speak Alsatian habitually with their children similar to Occitan, which is almost three time of occasional Alsatian speakers. However, Occitan was the most occasionally spoken regional language at more than 1 million speakers. More than 200 thousand people spoke Breton habitually, and 400 thousand occasionally with their children. Nevertheless, both Creole and Corsican languages were the spoken relatively by very few adults around 200 thousand.

On the other hand, number of adults who speak Alsatian are recorded around 400 thousand, making it the largest spoken regional language, compare to Occitan which stands between 200 to 400 thousand. While, less than 100 thousand people speak Breton, Creole and Corsican, making the Corsican smallest regional spoken language.
