The charts below show the number of French adults whose parents spoke a French regional language to them when they were children and the number who speak a French regional language to their own children.

Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The charts illustrate the number of French adults, measured in thousands, whose parents spoke five different regional languages to them during childhood, either habitually or occasionally. The final chart shows the number of adults who spoke these languages to their own children.

Overall, Occitan had the highest figures for parental use, especially occasionally, whereas Corsican recorded the lowest figures. However, Alsatian was the most widely passed on to the next generation.

Looking at the first two charts, Occitan had the highest figure for occasional use, at more than one million adults, followed by Breton at around 400 thousand. Alsatian was spoken occasionally by about 200 thousand people. In habitual use, Occitan and Alsatian were the most common, at around 600 thousand each, while Breton accounted for approximately 200 thousand adults. Creole and Corsican had considerably lower figures for both cases.

The final chart shows that Alsatian was the language most commonly passed on to children, at approximately 400 thousand, followed by Occitan at around 250 thousand. Breton, Creole and Corsican had much lower figures, at less than even 100 thousand.
