Number of adults (in thousands) whose parents spoke a regional language to them in childhood

Number of adults (in thousands) whose parents spoke a regional language to them in childhood

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The bar chart below reports the numbers of French adults whose parents spoke a French regional language when they were young and the number of people who speak a French regional language to their own children.

Overall, the Occitan results to be the most occasionally spoken regional language by far; however, if we consider the habitually spoken languages, the Occitan and the Alsatian seem to be equally widespread. Moreover, the Alsatian appears to be most spoken language by parents to their children.

Looking at the first chart, it is interesting to notice that Occitan is spoken occasionally by almost 1.1 million people but just six-hundred people spoke it habitually. The alsatian, on the other hand, has less occasionally speaker, reaching 200 hundred.

Breton, Creole and Corsican, instead, are less common than the previous one with a number of habitually and occasionally speaker quote similar.

Although the Alsatian is not the most common dialect spoken to children in the past, now it appears to be widespread with almoust four hundred parents who speak this language to their children

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the task by describing the provided charts, but it fails to accurately interpret the data. For instance, the student misreads the figures, stating 'six-hundred people' for Occitan when the chart indicates 600,000. Furthermore, the description of the data is inconsistent and lacks a clear overview of the trends. The comparison between the two charts is underdeveloped, and the student struggles to present the information in a logical, data-driven manner. To improve, ensure that units (thousands) are correctly applied and that the key features—such as the most and least popular languages—are clearly identified and supported by accurate data points.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate. For example, 'Moreover' and 'Looking at the first chart' are used to transition, but the logical flow between sentences is frequently disrupted by unclear referencing. The progression of ideas is somewhat disjointed, particularly when moving between the two charts. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words more naturally and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus that connects logically to the next.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary range is limited and contains several errors that occasionally impede clarity. There are issues with word formation and collocation, such as 'less occasionally speaker' instead of 'fewer occasional speakers' and 'quote similar' instead of 'quite similar'. The student also struggles with basic numerical terminology, leading to confusion in the data presentation. To reach a higher band, you should work on using more precise terminology for describing trends (e.g., 'predominant', 'marginal', 'fluctuation') and ensure that word forms (nouns vs. adjectives) are used correctly in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('Occitan results to be'), incorrect pluralization ('less occasionally speaker'), and spelling errors ('almoust'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of commas. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors is high enough to distract the reader. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring that complex sentence structures are constructed with accurate grammar.
