Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to describe the charts but fails to accurately represent the data. The figures cited, such as '1 million to 600 thousands', do not align with the provided charts, and the comparison between the two charts is unclear. The overview is vague and does not effectively highlight the key trends or significant differences between the two sets of data. Furthermore, the report lacks a clear distinction between the two categories (parents' language vs. own children's language), making it difficult for the reader to follow the information. To improve, you must ensure that the data points are extracted accurately and that the comparison is structured logically to reflect the information provided in the charts.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is disjointed. While there is an attempt at an overview, the transition between the two charts is abrupt. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Interestingly' and 'finally', but they are sometimes used mechanically or inappropriately. The referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly when discussing the different languages. To improve, focus on using a wider range of linking words to connect sentences and ensure that each paragraph has a clear focus, helping the reader navigate the comparison between the two charts more effectively.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and contains several inaccuracies. Phrases like 'highly spoked' (should be 'widely spoken') and 'starting years' are unnatural. There are also issues with terminology, such as 'international language' used to describe regional languages like Alsatian, and spelling errors like 'Brenton' (Breton) and 'Cori’s Ana' (Corsican). The range of vocabulary is insufficient to convey the information with precision. To improve, focus on learning accurate collocations for describing data and ensure you use the correct names for the languages mentioned in the charts.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement, such as 'Least language that was spoken... is creole and Corsican' and 'population who spoke Cori’s Ana language is below 100 thousand'. Sentence structures are often repetitive and lack complexity. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some sentences lacking proper structure. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, specifically subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and prepositions. Attempting to incorporate more complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses or comparative structures, would also help improve your score.
