The two charts below display the number of French adults whose parents spoke a French regional language to them when they were children, and the number who speak a French regional language to their own children. Alsatian and Occitan are the most habitually spoken languages, and Occitan is the most occasionally spoken language. Additionally, Alsatian has the largest number of adults who speak it to their own children. While both Alsatian and Occitan had about 600 thousand adults who grew up having their parents speak the language habitually to them, Occitan had the most significantly large amount of people who had the language spoken to them occasionally, at nearly 1 million. However, while regional languages were spoken between many families in the past, the number of adults who speak it to their own children is decreasing. In fact, Alsatian, which had the largest number of speakers, only has about 400 thousand.
