Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses the task but lacks precision in data reporting. While you identify the main trends, the data points are often inaccurate or confusingly presented. For example, you state that 'Alsatian, Occitan, Brenton, Creole and Corsian was spoken by around 200, 1m, 400, 200, 198 people respectively,' which does not align with the provided chart figures. Furthermore, the overview is somewhat vague. To improve, ensure you carefully transcribe the data from the charts and provide a clear, accurate summary of the key features, such as the overall decline in usage between the two generations, rather than just listing numbers.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is mechanical and sometimes inaccurate. Phrases like 'While, Breton was spoken...' and 'Number of adults who speak language to their own children' are used to transition between ideas, but the logical flow between sentences is often disjointed. The referencing is also occasionally unclear, making it difficult to track which data set is being discussed. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, unified focus would significantly enhance the coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The range of vocabulary is limited and repetitive. You rely heavily on basic terms like 'spoken' and 'number.' There are also issues with word choice and spelling, such as 'adolescent' (which is not appropriate for describing childhood) and 'Brenton/Corsian' (misspellings of Breton/Corsican). To reach a higher band, you should aim to use more varied and precise vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'fluctuate,' 'decline,' 'predominant,' or 'proportion.' Additionally, ensure that you use terminology accurately in the context of the data provided.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'Alsatian and Occitan was spoken,' 'Creole and Corsican was less spoken'). The sentence structures are relatively simple, and there are errors in punctuation and article usage. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors impacts the overall quality of the writing. To improve, focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement and try to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence structures, such as using relative clauses or subordinating conjunctions, while ensuring they are grammatically correct.
