The charts below show the number of French adults whose parents spoke a French regional language to them when they were children and the number who speak a French regional language to their own children.

Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.

The bar charts illustrate the number of French adults whose parents spoke a regional language to them during their childhood and the number of those who speak a regional language to their own children.

Overall, Alsatian and Occitan were the most commonly spoken regional languages, while Corsican and Creole had considerably lower figures. In addition, the number of adults who spoke these languages to their own children was generally lower than the number who had been spoken to in them by their parents.

Looking first at the languages spoken by parents, around 600,000 adults had been spoken to in Alsatian habitually, while approximately 250,000 had experienced it occasionally. Occitan was also relatively common, with a particularly high figure for those who were spoken to in this language occasionally, at around 1.05 million. By comparison, Corsican had the lowest figure among the languages shown, with approximately 150,000 adults being spoken to in it habitually.

Turning to the second generation, the figures for Alsatian and Occitan fell considerably. The number of adults who spoke Alsatian habitually to their own children was approximately 400,000, while the corresponding figure for Occitan was around 250,000. By contrast, the figures for Creole and Corsican showed relatively little change. Around 75,000 adults spoke Creole habitually to their children, compared with approximately 50,000 for Corsican.

Overall, although regional languages were relatively common among the parents of the adults surveyed, their use among the next generation was generally less widespread.
