Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers all parts of the task by describing the two charts provided. You have identified the main features, such as the prominence of Occitan and Alsatian, and made comparisons between the two sets of data. However, the report suffers from significant inaccuracies in data interpretation. For example, you state that 600 thousand parents spoke Occitan regularly, whereas the chart indicates a different figure. Additionally, the use of non-standard units like 'lakh' is inappropriate for an IELTS Academic task, which requires standard international numerical notation. To reach a higher band, ensure your data extraction is precise and use consistent, formal units of measurement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the progression of ideas is often disjointed. The use of cohesive devices is mechanical and sometimes misused, such as 'Additionaly' and 'Comapratively'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the transition between the first chart and the second chart is abrupt. The paragraphing is present but does not always logically group related information, leading to a somewhat fragmented reading experience. Improving the flow between sentences using a wider variety of linking words would enhance the coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary range is limited and repetitive. There are frequent spelling errors throughout the text, such as 'ocassionally', 'langugaes', 'Alastian', and '9 90 thousal'. These errors, combined with the use of informal or non-standard terms like 'lakh', detract from the professional tone required for an Academic Task 1 report. While you attempt to use some topic-specific vocabulary, the lack of precision and the high frequency of spelling mistakes hinder the overall quality of the response. Focus on mastering the spelling of basic descriptive terms and using standard numerical expressions.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a high frequency of grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'The charts illustrates', 'parents spoke... with there kids'), incorrect verb tenses, and awkward sentence construction. Complex sentence structures are attempted but are often marred by errors, such as 'The numbers for this language goes down'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage and spacing. To improve, you should focus on basic sentence structure, ensuring that subjects and verbs agree and that tense usage is consistent throughout the report.
