Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response fails to address the task requirements effectively. Firstly, it is under the 150-word minimum length requirement. Secondly, the content is largely inaccurate; the student misinterprets the data, referring to 'lakhs' (a non-standard unit for IELTS) and failing to clearly distinguish between the two charts provided. The report lacks a clear overview and fails to accurately describe the trends or compare the figures provided in the charts. Furthermore, the final paragraph includes personal opinions about the importance of language, which is irrelevant to an academic data description task. The response does not adequately cover the key features of the data.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.5

The response lacks logical organization and progression. There is no clear paragraph structure, and the transition between ideas is disjointed. Cohesive devices are either missing or used incorrectly, such as the awkward use of 'In results' to start a sentence. The referencing is unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow which data points are being discussed. The overall arrangement of information is confusing, and the lack of a clear introduction or summary further hinders the flow of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 4.5

The vocabulary is limited and often inappropriate for an academic report. The use of 'six lakh' is not standard in international English and is inappropriate for an IELTS task. There are frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'spoke their mother language' instead of 'native language' or 'regional language'. The phrasing is repetitive and lacks the precision required to describe statistical data. The student struggles to use vocabulary related to trends or comparisons effectively, relying on simplistic and sometimes inaccurate terminology.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that impede communication. There are significant issues with verb tense and subject-verb agreement, such as 'were spoken it habitually' and 'these graphs shows'. Sentence structures are simple and often contain errors, such as 'If we were taking about Alsatian language a six lakh people were spoken it'. Punctuation is also inconsistent. The range of grammatical structures is very limited, and the errors are frequent enough to cause difficulty for the reader in understanding the intended meaning.
