Student answer (Band 7.0)

The charts illustrate the number of French adults whose parents spoke a French regional language to them when they were children and the number who speak a French regional language to their own children. The figures are given in thousands.

Overall, the number of adults who spoke the language occasionally was highest for Occitan, while Alsatian and Occitan had the highest figures for those who spoke it habitually. Corsican had the lowest figures. In addition, Alsatian had the highest number of adults who speak a regional language to their own children.

Regarding adults whose parents spoke a regional language to them during childhood, the figure for habitual speakers was about 600,000 in both Alsatian and Occitan, while the figure for Corsican was only around 75,000. Among occasional speakers, the figure for Breton increased from about 275,000 to 400,000. Similarly, Creole rose from around 100,000 to 125,000, while Occitan recorded the highest figure of all, at approximately 1.1 million.

On the other hand, among adults who speak a regional language to their own children, Alsatian had the highest figure, at about 400,000, followed by Occitan at around 250,000. Corsican had the lowest number, at only about 75,000, while Breton and Creole both stood at approximately 100,000.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all parts of the task well. You have successfully identified the key features of the charts, including the distinction between habitual and occasional speakers in the first chart and the data for the second chart. The overview provides a clear summary of the main trends, such as the prominence of Occitan and Alsatian. However, the report could be improved by more clearly distinguishing between the two charts in the body paragraphs. While you mention the figures, ensuring that the comparison between the two distinct categories (parents speaking to children vs. adults speaking to their own children) is more explicitly contrasted would elevate the analysis.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and two body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Regarding', and 'On the other hand' to link your points effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two main data sets. To reach a higher band, ensure that the transition between the two charts is even smoother, perhaps by using more sophisticated comparative language to highlight the shift in focus between the two data sets.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision. Terms like 'habitual', 'occasional', and 'recorded the highest figure' are used accurately. The vocabulary is appropriate for an academic report. To improve, try to incorporate more varied synonyms for 'figure' or 'number' (e.g., 'proportion', 'data point', 'statistic') to avoid repetition. Additionally, using more precise collocations when describing trends, such as 'witnessed a significant rise' instead of 'rose', would demonstrate a more sophisticated lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response displays a good variety of complex structures, such as the use of subordinate clauses ('whose parents spoke...') and comparative structures. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation is solid. There are no significant grammatical errors that impede communication. To aim for a higher band, you could experiment with more diverse sentence beginnings and perhaps more advanced passive constructions (e.g., 'It is observed that...') to maintain a more formal, objective tone throughout the report.
