IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below show the number of French adults whose parents spoke a French regional language to them when they were children and the number who speak a French regional language to their own children.

Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.

Number of adults (in thousands) whose parents spoke a regional language to them in childhood

Number of adults (in thousands) whose parents spoke a regional language to them in childhood

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Alsatian and occitan are the two regional languages that were spoke almost same number of population followed by Breton and other two regional languages. However, the significant number of population have seen to speak occitan followed by Breton and no significant difference has be observed in the last two languages that are creole and Corsican.

As the above two charts shows the significant correlation as most of the children who's parents have spoke Alsatian language to them shows higher number to speak to their own children's compared to other languages. The next important finding is that around 600 thousand people spoke occitan to their children and then the graph shows the decline in number that is indicating people tend to speak less that language to their children hence the next corresponding chart is showing less number of people are speaking occitan to their own children these graphs are representing language decline.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response fails to adequately describe the data provided. While it mentions several languages, it lacks a clear overview and fails to present the specific figures (in thousands) required for a Task 1 report. The analysis is vague, using terms like 'significant number' rather than referencing the actual data points from the charts. The comparison between the two charts is attempted but remains superficial and lacks precision. To improve, you must include specific data points to support your observations and ensure that the trends (e.g., the decline in usage) are clearly linked to the provided figures.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is divided into two paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes mechanical, such as the repetitive use of 'followed by'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly in the second paragraph where the connection between the two charts is described in a convoluted manner. The flow of ideas is hindered by awkward phrasing, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison between the two sets of data. More varied linking words and clearer signposting are needed to improve the structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. There are several instances of word-choice errors, such as 'spoke almost same number of population' instead of 'spoken by a similar number of people'. The phrase 'no significant difference has be observed' contains a grammatical error that also affects lexical precision. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to describe trends or data effectively. To reach a higher band, you should focus on using more precise terminology for describing statistics, such as 'a downward trend', 'a marginal difference', or 'a substantial decrease'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text that occasionally impede communication. Examples include 'whose parents have spoke' (should be 'had spoken'), 'children's' (incorrect plural possessive), and 'the above two charts shows' (subject-verb agreement error). The sentence structures are often clunky and lack the complexity expected at higher bands. The misuse of tenses and articles is consistent. You need to focus on basic subject-verb agreement and correct verb forms to ensure your writing is accurate and professional.
