IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below show the number of French adults whose parents spoke a French regional language to them when they were children and the number who speak a French regional language to their own children.

Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.

Number of adults (in thousands) whose parents spoke a regional language to them in childhood

Number of adults (in thousands) whose parents spoke a regional language to them in childhood

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The charts compare the number of French adults, measured in thousands, whose parents spoke a regional language to them during childhood, as well as the number who subsequently spoke these languages to their own children.

Overall, **Occitan was the most widely spoken language among parents**, particularly on an occasional basis, while Alsatian was the language most commonly passed on to the next generation. By contrast, Breton, Creole and Corsican were spoken by considerably fewer people.

In terms of language use during childhood, around **600,000 adults** had parents who habitually spoke either Alsatian or Occitan to them. However, while only about **200,000** experienced Alsatian occasionally, the figure for Occitan was much higher, at approximately **1.2 million**. Breton was spoken habitually to around 200,000 people and occasionally to roughly 400,000. The figures for Creole and Corsican were considerably lower, at approximately 50,000 habitual speakers each and around 100,000 occasional speakers.

The second chart shows a substantial decline in the number of adults who passed these languages on to their own children. **Alsatian was the most commonly transmitted language**, at about 400,000 speakers, followed by Occitan at approximately 250,000. The figures for Breton, Creole and Corsican were much lower, at around 100,000 or slightly below.

Overall, the data indicate that although regional languages were spoken to a large number of adults during their childhood, particularly Occitan, considerably fewer people continued the tradition by speaking these languages to their own children.
