Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to describe the charts but fails to provide a clear or accurate overview of the data. The information is presented in a fragmented manner, and there is significant confusion between the two charts (e.g., the second paragraph mentions 'spoken occasionally,' which is not clearly defined in the prompt). The data points cited are often vague or inaccurate, such as stating 'Breton spoke less than 400' without specifying the unit or the context of the chart. The report lacks a clear distinction between the two sets of data, making it difficult for the reader to follow the trends. To improve, you must ensure each data point is clearly linked to the correct category and chart.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The transition between ideas is often abrupt, and the use of cohesive devices is mechanical or misused, such as 'At the first glance' and 'Moving further.' The referencing is frequently unclear; for example, it is often ambiguous which chart or language is being discussed in the later sentences. The repetition of phrases like 'almost same' and 'approximately similar' creates a disjointed flow. To improve, use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each sentence clearly relates to the previous one to build a coherent argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive. You frequently use basic phrases such as 'almost same' and 'more than.' There is a lack of precision in describing the data, and the word choice is often informal or inaccurate (e.g., 'caretakers' instead of 'parents,' 'kids' instead of 'children'). The attempt to describe the languages is hindered by poor collocation, such as 'the languages of Alsatian and Occitan were speaking similar.' To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more precise terminology for describing trends, such as 'fluctuated,' 'remained stable,' or 'accounted for,' and avoid informal language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'the languages of Alsatian and Occitan were speaking similar' (incorrect passive/active voice) and 'Number of adults those spoke Alsatian was 400 thousands' (incorrect relative pronoun and pluralization). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with unnecessary spaces before periods. While the meaning is generally discernible, the high frequency of errors in basic sentence construction prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of relative clauses.
