The charts below show the number of French adults whose parents spoke a French regional language to them when they were children and the number who speak a French regional language to their own children.

Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.

The bar charts compare the number of French adults whose parents spoke a French regional language (Alsatian, Occitan, Breton, Creole, and Corsican) to them during childhood with the number who currently pass these languages on to their own children.

Overall, intergenerational transmission of regional languages shows a sharp decline. Occitan was the most widely spoken language by the parent generation, whereas Alsatian has become the most widely transmitted language to the next generation.

Parental Generation Transmission

Occitan was by far the most prominent regional language in the childhood of surveyed adults, with over 1 million adults hearing it spoken occasionally and around 610,000 hearing it spoken habitually.

Alsatian recorded around 600,000 adults who heard it habitually as children, alongside roughly 240,000 who heard it occasionally.

Breton reached approximately 260,000 adults habitually and 400,000 occasionally.
