Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which negatively impacts the score. While you have attempted to describe the provided data, the overview is somewhat confusing, and the data selection is inconsistent. You mention 'five different regional languages' but do not clearly distinguish between the two charts (parents speaking to children vs. adults speaking to their own children). The data points are often vague, such as 'approximately 1m' or '600k', without clearly linking them to the specific categories. To improve, ensure you clearly identify the two distinct datasets and provide a more structured comparison of the figures.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay lacks a clear logical progression. While there is an attempt at paragraphing, the transition between the introduction and the body is abrupt. The use of cohesive devices is mechanical and sometimes inaccurate, such as 'In which, Occitan accounted for...' which is grammatically incorrect and disrupts the flow. Referencing is also unclear; it is often difficult to determine which chart or category you are referring to. To improve, use clearer linking words to connect your ideas and ensure each paragraph has a distinct focus, such as one for the first chart and one for the second.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. You frequently use basic phrases like 'highest value', 'smallest value', and 'same trend'. There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'french native language' (should be 'French regional language') and 'Occitan occasionally spoken people' (which is awkward phrasing). The range of vocabulary is insufficient to convey the information with precision. To improve, try to incorporate more varied reporting verbs and nouns, such as 'the figure for...', 'a significant proportion', or 'a downward trend', and ensure you use the correct terminology for the languages mentioned.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text that occasionally impede communication. Examples include 'The given bar graphs illustrates' (subject-verb agreement error), 'Corsican followed by smallest value' (missing article/preposition), and 'people who spoke Alsatian and Occitan habitually their languages follow the same trend' (run-on/confused sentence structure). The range of sentence structures is limited, relying mostly on simple sentences with errors in punctuation and tense. To improve, focus on basic sentence construction, ensuring subjects and verbs agree, and practice using complex sentences with correct relative clauses.
