Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.
Number of adults (in thousands) whose parents spoke a regional language to them in childhood
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The barcharts illustrate the number of french adults in thousands whose parents spoke regional languages to them as children and the number who now speak these languages to their own children. Overall, Occitan and Alsatian are the most spoken languages compared to other languages.
First of all, approximately about 600 thousand adults heard Occitan regularly and about 1 million heard it occasionally. However, for Alsatian the figures were about 400 thousand and 300 thousand respectively. In contrast to this, fewer adults heard Breton with an average of less than 300 thousand heard it regularly and approximately 400 thousand heard it occasionally. Furthermore, creole and corsican were the least common languages.
On the other hand, approxima about 400 thousand adults spoke Alsatian to their own kids. While 250 thousand adults spoke Occitan to their own kids. The number of adults who spoke Breton declined at 75 thousand. While for creole and corsican the number fell to 60 thousand and 20 thousand respectively. Therefore, it can be deduced that overall, regional languages became less common amongst the younger generation.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all parts of the task by describing both charts. You have identified the key features, such as the most and least common languages, and provided a clear overview. However, the analysis is slightly hampered by a lack of precision in data reporting. For instance, you mention 'approximately about' which is redundant, and the comparison between the two charts could be more analytical. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are clearly linked to the specific categories (regular vs. occasional) and avoid vague phrasing. The summary is accurate but could be more effectively integrated into the body paragraphs to show the trend of decline more clearly.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized into an introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding summary. You use basic cohesive devices like 'First of all', 'In contrast to this', and 'On the other hand' to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical. The referencing is generally clear, but the transition between the two charts could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two distinct datasets. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the progression of ideas feels more natural rather than just listing figures.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'regional languages', 'regularly', and 'deduced'. However, there are some inaccuracies and repetitions. For example, 'approxima about' is a spelling error, and 'kids' is too informal for an academic report; 'children' or 'offspring' would be more appropriate. You also repeat 'spoke' and 'number' frequently. To improve, focus on using more precise synonyms and ensuring correct spelling throughout. Expanding your range of reporting verbs (e.g., 'witnessed', 'experienced', 'accounted for') would also enhance your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical slips. For example, 'The barcharts illustrate' should be 'The bar charts', and 'less than 300 thousand heard it regularly' is grammatically awkward. There are also issues with preposition usage and tense consistency. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band. Focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that your complex sentences are constructed accurately without missing articles or prepositions.
