IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the number of French adults whose parents spoke a French regional language to them when they were children and the number who speak a French regional language to their own children.
Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.
Number of adults (in thousands) whose parents spoke a regional language to them in childhood
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The given charts illustrates the amount of french adults whose guardians spoke a french regional language to them when they were younger and the digits of those who talk in french regional language with their children. Overall, when the adult children were in their childhood their parents mostly spoke Occitan language occasionally than habitually. Whereas, most of the adults spoke Alsatian language to their children.
Turning to the details, the figures demonstrate that the number of adults whose parents spoke Occitan occasionally to them in their childhood is higher than the other regional languages with more than 1 million thousands but when we talk about speaking languages habitually, the digits of Alsatian and Occitan languages are almost the same at almost 600 thousands and the other languages are less than these two languages. On the other hand, most of the adults spoke Alsatian to their own children and the digit of these adults is 4 Lakhs. Whereas, the number of least spoke language is almost half of 100 thousands.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses the task by describing the provided charts, but the analysis is hindered by significant inaccuracies in data interpretation. For instance, the claim that Occitan usage was 'more than 1 million thousands' is a major misreading of the scale, and the use of '4 Lakhs' is inappropriate for an IELTS Academic task, as it is a regional numbering system rather than standard international English. While the overview identifies some trends, the lack of precision in reporting the figures and the failure to clearly distinguish between the two charts (parents to children vs. adults to their own children) prevents a higher score. More careful attention to the specific data points is required.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into an introduction and two body paragraphs, which provides a basic structure. However, the progression of ideas is often confusing. The use of cohesive devices is mechanical and sometimes misused, such as the abrupt transition 'Turning to the details' followed by a somewhat disjointed explanation. Referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison between the two charts. To improve, you should use a wider range of linking words and ensure that each paragraph focuses on a clear, distinct aspect of the data to improve the logical flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, with several inaccuracies in word choice. Using 'digits' to refer to numerical data is incorrect; 'figures' or 'numbers' would be more appropriate. The phrase 'least spoke language' is grammatically incorrect and lacks precision. Additionally, the use of 'Lakhs' is not suitable for an international exam. You should focus on using more precise terminology for describing trends, such as 'the highest proportion,' 'a significant decline,' or 'remained stable.' Expanding your range of synonyms for 'number' and 'speak' will help improve your lexical score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Subject-verb agreement issues are present, such as 'The given charts illustrates' (should be 'illustrate'). There are also errors in sentence structure and article usage, such as 'in their childhood' (should be 'during their childhood') and 'the digits of Alsatian and Occitan languages are almost the same'. While there is an attempt at complex sentences, they are often faulty. To reach a higher band, you need to focus on basic accuracy, particularly with pluralization and verb forms, and practice constructing more complex sentences with correct punctuation.
