The charts compare the numbers of French adults whose parents spoke five regional languages to them during childhood and the numbers who now use these languages with their own children.
Overall, regional-language use appears to have declined considerably across generations. Occitan was by far the most commonly spoken language occasionally in childhood, whereas Alsatian is now the language most frequently passed on to children. In contrast, Creole and Corsican had the fewest speakers in both generations.
Regarding habitual use in childhood, Alsatian and Occitan were spoken to approximately 600,000 adults each. Breton ranked third, at around 250,000 speakers, while Creole and Corsican were used habitually by only about 100,000 and 80,000 people respectively. A different pattern can be seen for occasional use: over one million adults heard Occitan occasionally from their parents, compared with roughly 400,000 for Breton and 250,000 for Alsatian.
The figures for adults speaking these languages to their children are substantially lower. Alsatian is the only language still used by as many as 400,000 adults, followed by Occitan at approximately 250,000. The corresponding totals for Breton, Creole and Corsican are only about 100,000, 80,000 and 60,000.
