The charts below show the number of French adults whose parents spoke a French regional language to them when they were children and the number who speak a French regional language to their own children.

Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.

Overall, Occitan had the largest number of speakers who were exposed to it in childhood, particularly among those who now speak it occasionally. By contrast, Corsican had the smallest figures in most categories. Interestingly, Alsatian was the language most commonly passed on to the next generation.

Looking first at childhood exposure, approximately 600,000 adults were spoken to habitually in Alsatian and Occitan. Breton accounted for around 250,000, while the figures for Creole and Corsican were considerably lower, at about 100,000 and 70,000, respectively. In terms of occasional use, Occitan was by far the most prevalent, at roughly 1.1 million, followed by Breton at around 400,000. Alsatian, Creole and Corsican stood at approximately 250,000, 120,000 and 100,000.

The second chart shows a rather different pattern. Around 400,000 adults spoke Alsatian to their children, compared with approximately 250,000 for Occitan. Breton and Creole were used by about 90,000 and 80,000 adults, respectively, while Corsican was the least transmitted language, at only around 60,000.
