Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to describe the charts, but it fails to provide a clear or accurate overview of the data. The student mentions some categories such as 'Ocitan' and 'Corsican', but the numbers cited are frequently inaccurate or confused with other figures from the visual data (e.g., stating Occitan is 1.1 million habitually when it is actually 620 thousand habitually and 1,065 thousand occasionally). Furthermore, the comparison between childhood exposure and transmission to the next generation is muddled and lacks structured analysis of key trends. Important features, such as the overall dominance of Occitan and Alsatian compared to minority regional languages like Corsican, are not clearly articulated. Consequently, the task is only partially addressed, leading to a band score of 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the logical progression and overall organization are weak. The introduction is confusing and fails to set up a clear overview of the data. Cohesive devices are either misused or absent, resulting in disjointed sentences such as 'In the second paragraph these adults highly used Aisatian language...' where the referencing is unclear. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of information lacks internal coherence, making it difficult for the reader to follow the flow of information smoothly. Therefore, the response demonstrates an overall arrangement that is occasionally incoherent and repetitive, fitting the Band 5 descriptor.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is very limited and repetitive, with noticeable errors that impede communication. Examples include 'medium of instructions spoke on daily basis' and 'less speaking language'. Spelling and word-choice errors occur frequently, such as 'Ocitan' instead of Occitan, 'Aisatian' instead of Alsatian, and 'breton and la creole'. The student attempts to use less common items like 'habitually' and 'occasionally', but awkward phrasing and incorrect collocations ('highest speaking language', 'less speaking language in habitually') restrict the lexical range to a basic level, aligning with Band 4.5 to 5.0 descriptors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
Grammatical control is weak throughout the response, featuring a very limited range of sentence structures and frequent errors. Simple sentences often contain structural flaws, such as 'Now these at what significant number of adults can speak...', and complex structures are frequently faulty or ungrammatical (e.g., 'The number of speakers that used breton and la creole languages is higher than the numbers of daily speakers' where tense and subject-verb agreement suffer). Punctuation and article usage are also problematic. Because these frequent errors cause difficulty for the reader and prevent fluent comprehension, the performance sits firmly at Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0.
