The charts below show the number of French adults whose parents spoke a French regional language to them when they were children and the number who speak a French regional language to their own children.

The charts illustrate the number of French adults, in thousands, whose parents spoke a regional language to them during childhood and the number of adults who speak a regional language to their own children.

Overall, Occitan and Alsatian had the highest numbers, while Corsican had the lowest figures. Occitan was particularly common among parents who spoke the language occasionally. However, Alsatian was the most common language spoken by adults to their own children.

Looking first at the languages spoken by parents, about 600,000 adults had parents who spoke Alsatian and Occitan to them habitually. The figure for Breton was lower, at around 250,000. Creole and Corsican had much smaller figures, at approximately 100,000 and 80,000 respectively. For occasional use, Occitan was the highest, at about 1.1 million adults.
