The charts below show the number of French adults whose parents spoke a French regional language to them when they were children and the number who speak a French regional language to their own children.

Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.

The bar charts compare the number of French adults, in thousands, whose parents spoke five regional languages to them during childhood, and the number who use these languages with their own children.

Overall, Alsatian and Occitan were the most commonly spoken languages during childhood, while Occitan was particularly prevalent as an occasional language. However, Alsatian was the most frequently passed on to the next generation.

Around 600,000 adults were spoken to habitually in both Alsatian and Occitan, compared with approximately 250,000 for Breton and under 100,000 for Creole and Corsican. In terms of occasional use, Occitan was clearly the highest, at just over 1 million, followed by Breton at about 400,000 and Alsatian at roughly 250,000. Creole and Corsican stood at around 100,000 each.

Among adults speaking regional languages to their children, Alsatian led at 400,000, followed by Occitan at 250,000. Breton, Creole and Corsican accounted for approximately 100,000, 90,000 and 70,000, respectively.
