IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the number of French adults whose parents spoke a French regional language to them when they were children and the number who speak a French regional language to their own children.
Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.
Number of adults (in thousands) whose parents spoke a regional language to them in childhood
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The bar charts illustrate data on French adults whose parents spoke a regional language during their childhood, alongside the number of these adults who speak a regional language to their own children. Five languages are compared: Alsatian, Occitan, Breton, Creole, and Corsican.
Overall, regional languages were spoken much more frequently by the older generation than by adults to their children. Occitan and Alsatian recorded the highest figures overall.
In the first chart, Occitan leads the occasional category with nearly 1.2 million adults reporting occasional childhood exposure. Alsatian has the highest habitual count at around 600,000. Meanwhile, Breton, Creole, and Corsican stayed below 200,000 in both categories.
In the second chart, a sharp decline is evident. Alsatian drops to roughly 700,000 speakers, and Occitan falls to about 300,000. Breton, Creole, and Corsican each drop below 100,000 speakers.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the main features of the charts by identifying the general trends and comparing the languages across the two categories. However, the length requirement is not met, as the response is under the 150-word minimum, which limits the overall development of the task. While the overview accurately points out that regional languages were spoken more frequently by older generations, some data points are slightly imprecise or under-developed, such as the misreading in the final paragraph where Alsatian and Occitan figures are inverted compared to the chart data. To reach a higher band, you must ensure the word count exceeds 150 words and check your data points against the visual carefully to avoid inaccuracies.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a clear overall progression and logical arrangement. Information is organized into sensible paragraphs, moving from an introduction and overview to specific details for each chart. Cohesive devices such as 'Meanwhile' and 'In the first chart' are used to guide the reader through the data, although the referencing and logical links between ideas occasionally feel a bit mechanical. Paragraphing is handled well, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the visual data. To achieve a higher level, make your transitions between ideas smoother and ensure that relationships between data sets are connected more fluidly.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary with good flexibility and precision. Less common lexical items are used appropriately, such as 'frequently', 'exposure', and 'habitual count'. Word choice is generally natural, and you successfully avoid excessive repetition by varying your terminology for numbers and trends. There are no notable spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication. To push into higher bands, incorporate even more sophisticated, precise collocations and less common academic phrases to describe data fluctuations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
There is a good variety of complex structures deployed throughout the report, including relative clauses and participial phrases, such as 'adults whose parents spoke a regional language' and 'alongside the number of these adults who speak'. You maintain good control of grammar and punctuation, with frequent error-free sentences and accurate tense usage when describing the historical and current data. Minor slips do not impede communication. To maintain a strong performance in this area, continue to mix simple and complex sentence forms while ensuring absolute accuracy in complex syntactical structures.
