Student answer (Band 6.0)
The chart illustrates the number of French adults whose parents spoke a French regional language in there childhood and the number who spoke a French regional language to their own children.
Overall, Alastian and Occitan were the most common language which was spoken on a regular basis while Occitan was spoken by a significantly larger number of parents' of adults on occasional basis. Adults who spoke to their own children were commonly using Alastian.
Approximately 600 thousand adults had experienced their parents talking in Alastian and Occitan habitually whereas corsican language used by a smaller amount of people. While parents used to speak in Alastian habitually, the numbers were significantly low in the occasional category.
Occitan was the most commonly used language when spoken occasionally with more than 1 million thousand parents speakers. Creole and Corsican were the least spoken languages in both groups with a hundred thousand habitual speakers and a slightly higher than a hundred thousand occasional speakers.
The same pattern was observed in adults who spoke a regional language to their own children where again Creole and Corsican were spoken the least with approximately 80 thousand and 60 thousand speakers. Adults were used to speak in Alsatian the most with 400 thousand adults speaking in that particular language followed by Occitan at 250 thousand speakers.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, successfully presenting an overview of the charts regarding French regional languages. Key features and main trends are highlighted, such as the prominence of Alsatian and Occitan, and the lower figures for Creole and Corsican. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. For instance, the discussion of the occasional category contains minor confusion regarding the data, and some comparisons are left underdeveloped. To reach a higher band, the report would need to ensure all major trends are fully supported by accurate data points without minor misinterpretations of the figures.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The report has a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical progression, moving from an introduction and overview to specific details about habitual usage, occasional usage, and transmission to children. Paragraphing is used to separate these ideas. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty, with repetitive referencing structures and occasional awkward transitions between sentences, such as abruptly shifting between language categories. To improve further, the writer should employ a wider and more natural range of cohesive devices to link ideas more smoothly across paragraphs.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and terms related to statistics and language use, such as "habitually", "occasionally", and "regional language". There are some lexical inaccuracies and word-form errors, such as "parents' of adults" and "corsican language used by a smaller amount of people" instead of 'number of people', as well as minor spelling issues like "Alastian". However, these errors do not impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the descriptions easily.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to use relative clauses and subordinate structures. There are some grammar and punctuation errors present throughout the text, such as the preposition error "in there childhood" instead of 'in their childhood', missing capitalisation on proper nouns like "corsican", and awkward phrasing in passive structures like "Adults were used to speak in Alsatian". These errors occur consistently but rarely impede overall communication, placing the grammatical control securely in the middle range.
