Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially. While you attempt to provide an overview and mention several languages from the chart, your handling of the data is limited and contains significant inaccuracies. For example, your claim that 600K people speak Alsatian and Occitan habitually misreads the chart, as Occitan actually has 620K habitual speakers and Alsatian has 600K, but more importantly, you confuse the categories of habitual and occasional speakers across different sections. Additionally, the overview is extremely basic, stating only that Alsatian and Occitan are major languages. To reach a higher level, you need to select and compare key features more accurately, ensure all figures are correctly cited without confusion between data sets, and provide a clearer, more comprehensive overview of main trends.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some organisation in your report, with an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs for the different language categories. However, there is no clear overall progression, and the logical flow between sentences is occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing and mechanical transitions such as 'On the other hand'. Furthermore, referencing is sometimes unclear, particularly in sentences like 'With regards to the adults spoke regional language to them in childhood', which makes it difficult to follow the comparison. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs relies heavily on repetitive structures rather than flexible cohesive devices. To improve, you should ensure that each sentence links smoothly to the next and that your grouping of data follows a logical, easy-to-follow narrative arc throughout the response.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
Your vocabulary range is limited and minimally adequate for the task. You make frequent errors in word choice, word form, and spelling, such as 'french grown ups', 'alstian', 'off springs', and 'occitan rose a massive jump'. Capitalisation rules are also frequently ignored for proper nouns like 'french', 'alstian', 'corsican', and 'creole'. While you attempt some less common vocabulary items, inaccurate collocations and awkward phrasing—such as 'relatively small languages to speak by' and 'hit a record low'—cause noticeable difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher band, you must use precise, academic vocabulary appropriate for data reports, check your spelling of key terms from the prompt, and ensure correct word forms when discussing statistics and trends.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You demonstrate a very limited range of sentence structures, relying primarily on simple and faulty complex forms. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the response, including issues with verb forms and tenses, such as 'adults spoke regional language', 'adults now speak to their children more alsatian with growing to 400k', and 'number of adults speaks'. Preposition use and clause structures are also problematic, as seen in 'with only 100k speak habitually and almost remains static with occasionally speakers'. These frequent errors require the reader to slow down and can cause comprehension difficulties. To improve, you need to practise forming complex sentences accurately, ensure subject-verb agreement, and gain better control over relative clauses and participial phrases when describing graphical data.
