Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response addresses the task only minimally and relies heavily on copying instructions directly from the prompt, with a significant portion of the text being lifted verbatim. Furthermore, data is selected and reported in a very mechanical and repetitive fashion, listing figures without providing a clear, overarching overview or meaningful comparisons. While some data points from the charts are mentioned, such as the figures for Alsatian and Occitan, many of the specific numbers and labels are inaccurate or confused (for instance, misinterpreting scale values). To move to a higher band, the writer needs to present a clear overview of main trends, select and compare key features accurately, and avoid copying the rubric.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some basic organization present, with the writing split into two paragraphs corresponding broadly to the two charts, but there is no clear overall progression of ideas. The response lacks effective cohesive devices, relying instead on repetitive sentence starters like 'The language...' and 'If we check...'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal logical flow within paragraphs is disjointed and mechanical. To improve coherence and cohesion, the student should use a wider variety of linking words and transitional phrases to connect ideas smoothly, ensure referencing is clear throughout, and structure the report with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, heavily reliant on words directly copied from the prompt such as 'regional language', 'parents', and 'children'. There are frequent instances of unnatural word choices, awkward phrasing, and word formation errors, such as 'speaks language', 'spoken occasionally', and 'aisatian'. These lexical limitations and errors strain the reader and restrict the response to a basic communicative level. To achieve a higher band, the student must develop a broader range of vocabulary related to data reporting, use less common lexical items with greater precision, and improve control over spelling and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The writing displays a very limited range of sentence structures, consisting mostly of simple, repetitive clauses that fail to showcase complex grammar. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'people who speaks language'), missing articles, incorrect prepositions, and improper capitalization (e.g., 'french', 'aisatian', 'occitan'). Punctuation is also problematic in places, with sentence fragments or run-on structures. To progress, the writer needs to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence forms while improving basic grammatical accuracy to ensure meaning is not distorted.
