Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially. While the student attempts to describe the charts comparing the number of French adults whose parents spoke regional languages to them with those who speak them to their own children, key information is omitted and some data points are inaccurate or confusingly stated. For instance, the writer states that '600 thousand parents learnt Alstian and Occitan habitually,' misinterpreting adults whose parents spoke the language as adults who 'learnt' it, and confusing the categories. Furthermore, comparisons are often vague, such as 'Corsican had a minor rise,' which is not clearly supported by the data. The overview is overly simplistic, mentioning only that Occitan is the most popular language, which fails to capture the wider trends shown in the charts. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to select and report key features much more accurately and provide a clearer overall summary of the main trends without misinterpreting the source data.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates some organisation with paragraphs used to group related ideas, but there is no clear overall progression throughout the text. The relationships between sentences and paragraphs can be disjointed, and referencing is sometimes unclear, such as shifting abruptly between the two charts without smooth transitions. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often basic or repetitive, relying heavily on connectors like 'whereas,' 'additionally,' and 'in more detail' in a mechanical way. Paragraphing is attempted, with an introductory sentence followed by body paragraphs, but the internal logical flow within paragraphs needs strengthening to guide the reader more effectively. To achieve a higher score, the writer must ensure that ideas follow a clear logical sequence and that cohesive devices are employed more naturally and accurately to connect sentences and paragraphs.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts some less common vocabulary related to the charts, such as 'habitually,' 'fluctuation,' and 'constant,' but these attempts are often accompanied by spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'Alstian' instead of 'Alsatian,' 'occassionally,' 'inthe spoekn the practices,' and 'spoekn.' These noticeable errors and awkward collocations cause some difficulty for the reader and impede precise communication. There is also a heavy reliance on repetitive phrasing when describing the data. To move up to a higher band, the writer needs to expand their lexical range, use less common terms with greater precision and correct spelling, and ensure that word choices accurately reflect the data presented in the charts.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response exhibits a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside a few attempts at complex forms that are often faulty. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text, including issues with prepositions, articles, and verb forms, such as 'The least spoken noticed is Corsican' and 'Corsican was the lowest spoekn by parents to their little one's.' These frequent errors can cause difficulty for the reader and disrupt the flow of the writing. The mix of simple and complex sentence forms lacks flexibility and control. To achieve a higher band, the writer must demonstrate better control over complex sentence structures, improve accuracy in basic grammatical patterns, and eliminate frequent errors in punctuation and word forms.
