Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting an overview and covering both charts regarding regional languages in France. However, some areas are under-developed or contain inaccuracies in data interpretation. For example, the student writes that 'Occitan was the most common language, which spoke by parents, while Alsatian was the widely language to spoke by adults,' which lacks precision when detailing the breakdown between habitual and occasional speakers. While key features such as the overall decline across generations are identified, the lack of careful precision in reporting figures keeps this criterion at the current level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

There is a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the report into an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs for each chart ('Looking first, at the languages...' and 'Turning to the second chart...'). However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical, and referencing is not always clear, as seen in abrupt transitions and awkward sentence links. Paragraphing is present, but the logical progression between sentences occasionally falters due to awkward phrasing and mechanical cohesive devices, which places the response firmly at this level.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with attempts to use less common items such as 'habitually', 'occasionally', and 'generation'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'meseared', 'regonal', 'noticable think', and 'lead popular' instead of 'least popular'. These lexical errors and awkward word formations restrict the range and precision of the response, preventing it from achieving a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control is inconsistent. There are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with passive voice constructions, verb forms, and prepositions, such as 'which spoke by parents', 'languages spoke by people', 'Occitan was spoke', and 'adults were spoke Alsatian'. Punctuation errors and comma splices also occur. While these errors do not completely impede communication, their frequency across complex structures demonstrates limited grammatical control.
