Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response identifies the chart’s general subject and attempts to report figures, but it covers only a small part of the information. It gives an approximate figure for Occitan and notes that Breton, Creole and Corsican are lower, yet it omits Alsatian and provides no meaningful comparison with the second chart. The final sentence is unfinished, so the figures for adults speaking to their own children are not reported. There is also a key factual error: the chart shows about 620,000 adults spoke Occitan habitually and about 1.065 million occasionally, not 600 and 1 million exactly as stated. The response is also 53 words below the required minimum. Include a clear overview and compare the main figures across both charts.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
There is a basic attempt to organise the report: an opening sentence introduces both charts, followed by a sentence about the first chart and a transition beginning with “While”. However, the ideas do not progress into a complete report, and the final sentence breaks off at “Artesian lag”, leaving the comparison unfinished. The opening also uses two separate sentence fragments, with “And the number…” not connected grammatically to the preceding sentence. “While” signals a contrast, but the contrast is never completed. To improve, use clear paragraphs for the introduction, overview and key comparisons, and ensure each linking expression connects complete, logically related ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses some relevant task vocabulary, including “habitually”, “occasionally” and “less commonly spoken”, which helps convey frequency. However, the range is limited, and several inaccurate or misspelled expressions make the report harder to understand. “Amount of French adults” is an unsuitable collocation for countable people, while “French regional language” is repeated rather than varied. “Occassionally” is misspelled, and “Artesian lag” appears to be an unsuccessful attempt to name Alsatian. Use precise terms such as “number of adults”, “regional languages” and “spoke to their children”, and check language names and spelling carefully. More varied comparison vocabulary would also help describe the charts.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts longer sentence forms, but control is weak and the final sentence is incomplete. In “The given chart illustrates the amount of French adults whose parents use to speak with them…”, the relative clause and verb phrase are not formed correctly; a clearer structure would be “The chart shows how many adults were spoken to in a regional language by their parents.” The opening also creates a fragment with “And the number…”. In “these kids when grown and spoken to their own children developed that they spoken…”, the clause lacks a clear grammatical structure and uses an incorrect verb form. Focus first on complete sentences, consistent past-tense reporting, and accurate clause construction before attempting more complex structures.
