Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, coming in at 140 words (excluding prompt-copied text), which negatively impacts task achievement. Furthermore, the selection and reporting of data contain significant inaccuracies and misinterpretations of the charts. For instance, the student states that Alsatian and Occitan were spoken regularly 'only by sixtey thousand people', which severely misreads the figures (600,000 for Alsatian and 620,000 for Occitan). The overview is weak, and the comparisons between generations are confused. While the writer attempts to describe several categories, the widespread misreading of numerical data prevents a fully developed or accurate response. Therefore, it fits the Band 4 descriptor.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, and some basic cohesive devices are used, such as 'First of all', 'However', and 'In contrast'. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by confusing statements and errors in referencing. The relationship between sentences is not always clear, and the overall arrangement lacks a coherent structure due to the fragmented handling of the data. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of ideas is erratic, such as mixing grandparents and children statistics without clear thematic separation. This places the response firmly in Band 5.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.0
The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, with frequent lexical errors that impede communication. Examples of inappropriate word choice and spelling errors include 'bellow' instead of 'below', 'french' uncapitalised, 'provincial mother language' instead of regional language, 'irregulalry', 'reigonal', 'regulary', 'sixtey', 'alsaian', and 'fourtey'. While the student attempts some less common terms like 'offspring' and 'ancestors', the high density of spelling mistakes and inaccurate word forms restricts the score to Band 4.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is weak. There are numerous grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('language, which have been categorized', 'Occitan had been spoken regulary but only by sixtey thousand people'), incorrect verb tenses ('used to spoke', 'had been lesser spoken'), and missing articles. Punctuation is also occasionally faulty. These errors are frequent and often cause difficulty for the reader, aligning the response with Band 4.
