IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below show the number of French adults whose parents spoke a French regional language to them when they were children and the number who speak a French regional language to their own children.

Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.

Number of adults (in thousands) whose parents spoke a regional language to them in childhood

Number of adults (in thousands) whose parents spoke a regional language to them in childhood

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The chart illustrates the ratio of those who learn the French regional language from their parents in their childhood age and another chart displays the number of those adults who speak the same language with their offsprings.

Overall, it is clear that the report for a university lecturer recorded maximum number of adults learn the Occitan language in their childhood age from their parents habtually and occasionally while maximum number of adults learned the Alsatian language to their child.

First, the data for adults who learned languages from their parents in their childhood age. Total number of adults who learned Alsatian language from their parents is 600 while this number is sharply declined for those who learned this language to spoke occasionally to little above 200. Range of their number for Occitan language from spoken habitually to spoken occasionally is held from 600 to 1m. However, number of adults for careole language is dramatically declined about 100 for habitually spoken and it is little above than 100 for occasionally spoken. The number for Corsican language is slightly less than Careole language.

Second, the data for those adults who speak a regional language to their own children. Total number of adults for Alsatian language is 400 while number of adults for Occitan language is lower than Alsatian. These are about 250. The number of adults for Breton, Creole, and Corsican languages is decreased step by step from 100.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify both charts and provide an overview, noting that Occitan is prominent among adults who heard a language from their parents and that Alsatian leads in transmission to children. However, the overview misstates the first chart: Occitan is highest only for occasional speech (about 1,065,000), while Alsatian is highest for habitual speech (about 600,000, just above Occitan). The report also omits Breton from the first chart and gives little comparison of the two parent-speech categories. In the second chart, you correctly identify Alsatian as highest and Occitan as next, but “decreased step by step from 100” is imprecise: Breton is about 90, Creole 80, and Corsican 60. Select and compare the main figures more accurately to develop the report fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for the two charts. “First” and “Second” help signal the shift between chart sections, and the information is generally presented in a sensible order. However, some links are mechanical, and the first data paragraph moves between languages without a clear comparison or consistent pattern. The overview sentence is also difficult to follow because several ideas are crowded together. Use clearer topic sentences and organise each chart around its main contrasts—for example, compare habitual and occasional figures before moving through the smaller categories. More precise referencing would also help readers follow which figures and language category each sentence describes.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “habitually,” “occasionally,” “sharply declined,” and “dramatically,” and you attempt to describe comparisons rather than simply list figures. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unclear, such as “ratio” for the number of adults, “learn the … language … in their childhood age,” and “speak the same language with their offsprings.” “Range … is held from” is also an unnatural way to report figures, while “careole” is a misspelling of “Creole.” These errors sometimes make the intended meaning harder to understand. Build a more reliable set of chart-reporting expressions, especially for describing numbers, categories, and changes, and check spelling of language names.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast introduced by “while” and a sentence beginning “However.” Nevertheless, errors occur frequently in sentence construction and verb forms. For example, “maximum number of adults learn” needs a past-tense or noun-based construction, and “number … is sharply declined” incorrectly combines the passive form with “declined.” The opening sentence also has an unclear structure, and phrases such as “those adults who learned this language to spoke occasionally” do not form a grammatical clause. Articles and prepositions are also inconsistent, as in “learned Alsatian language” and “speak … with their own children.” Practise accurate basic clauses first, then add complex comparisons while checking tense, agreement, and sentence boundaries.
