Student answer (Band 4.5)
The chart illustrates the proportion of the adults (in thousands) whose parents spoke a regional language to them in childhood and those adults who speak a regional language to their own children. The data is presented in numbers ( in thousands).
Overall, Occitan language is spoken 600 thousand habitually and more than 1 million occansionally by parents to children and 200 thousand adults spoke by own.
Secondly, 600 thousand habiutally and more than 200 thousand occasionally parents spoke their children Aisation language, but adults who spoke it by own are 400 thousand.
Breten has low ratio of 270 thousand and 400 thousand spoken by parents and less than 100 thousand by own.
Now Creole and Corsican languages, first has same ratio by parents, more than 100 thousand by own. Second has very low ration of 90 and 100 thousand by parents and 50 thousand adults spoke it by own.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response identifies the two chart topics and reports several relevant comparisons, including Occitan’s high occasional figure and Alsatian’s 400,000 adults speaking it to their own children. However, it does not provide a clear, accurate overview of the main patterns, and some figures are misreported: Occitan is about 250,000, not 200,000, for speaking to one’s own children; Creole’s own-children figure is about 80,000, not more than 100,000; and Corsican is about 60,000, not 50,000. The description of Creole as having the same parental figures is also unclear. The report is 136 words, below the 150-word minimum, which limits its coverage. Add a concise overview and check each comparison against the chart.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is a basic sequence: an introduction, an overall statement, and then comparisons of individual languages. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Secondly,” and “Now” show an attempt to guide the reader. However, the progression is not consistently clear: “Now Creole and Corsican languages, first has same ratio by parents” makes the comparison difficult to follow, and the report does not separate its overview clearly from the detailed data. Some sentences combine several figures without explaining which chart category each belongs to. Use distinct paragraphs for the overview and details, and organise the body by comparing the two charts for each language or by grouping the largest and smallest figures. Clearer references would improve the flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses relevant task vocabulary, including “habitually,” “occasionally,” “ratio,” and “adults,” and it attempts to distinguish how often parents spoke the languages. However, the range is limited and several word choices or spellings reduce precision: “proportion” is unsuitable when the chart gives numbers, “spoken by own” is not a natural expression, and “ratio” is repeatedly used where “number” or “figure” is intended. There are also spelling errors such as “occansionally,” “habiutally,” “Aisation,” and “Breten.” Use accurate chart language and check spelling. For example, describe the figures as the number of adults and say that they “spoke the language to their own children.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts both simple statements and longer comparisons, but sentence structures are limited and errors occur frequently. For example, “600 thousand habitually and more than 1 million occansionally by parents to children” is a fragment without a clear subject and verb. In “adults who spoke it by own are 400 thousand,” the clause and verb pattern are awkward, while “parents spoke their children Aisation language” is missing the preposition “to.” Articles and sentence boundaries also need attention, as in “the adults” and the comma-linked opening of the final paragraph. Build complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, such as “About 600,000 adults were spoken to habitually in Alsatian by their parents.” Then proofread agreement, articles, and punctuation.
