Number of adults (in thousands) whose parents spoke a regional language to them in childhood

Number of adults (in thousands) whose parents spoke a regional language to them in childhood

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The bar charts below depict the number of French regional language speakers, the first bar chart provides data on the number of adults who were spoken a French regional language by their parents in childhood and the second bar chart illustrates the number of adults who speak a regional language to their own children.

Overall, it is evident that the there are five regional languages (Alsatian, occitan, breton, creole and corsican). It is clear that the regional language Occitan is spoken widely occasionally as well as habitually;however the language Corsican is the least spoken language in the adults who were spoken this regional language by their parents as well as the adults who speak this language to their own children.

To be specific, a more observation of the bar charts reveals that Alsatian is the most common language that exactly is spoken by 400 adults to their children now; nevertheless Corsican is the least spokenlanguage which is spoken by less then 100 individuals to their children. Furthermore, it is clear that Breton, Creole and corsican are the least spoken regional languages that were spoken to adults by their parents as well as to the children now and they are not spoken by more than 200 people; however Breton was spoken by almost 400 adults occasionally by their parents. Occitan was spoken by almost 1 million individuals occasionally and only 600 adults were spoken this regional language habitually. Moreover, almost 300 of adults speak Occitian to their children now.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the two charts and include a general overview, correctly noting Occitan’s prominence in the childhood data and Corsican’s low figures. You also report several relevant comparisons, such as Alsatian being highest for speaking to children and Breton’s occasional figure being around 400,000. However, the overview is not fully accurate: Corsican is not the least in every childhood category, since Creole is lower for habitual speech, and Occitan’s occasional figure is about 1.065 million rather than simply “almost 1 million.” Some descriptions are also vague or contradictory, including calling Breton, Creole and Corsican all among the least spoken without distinguishing their values. Select the main contrasts more precisely and compare both childhood categories with the figures for the next generation.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview and a detail paragraph. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Furthermore” and “Moreover” help signal relationships between points. However, the progression within the final paragraph is difficult to follow because it moves between languages and chart categories without a consistent order. The sentence beginning “Furthermore” combines several comparisons and then adds a qualification about Breton, making the relationship between the points unclear. Some transitions, including “nevertheless” and “however,” do not express a clear contrast. Organise the details by chart or by a consistent language order, and use simpler links that accurately show whether information is being added or contrasted.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “depict,” “illustrates,” “habitually” and “occasionally,” and you attempt to describe rankings with phrases such as “most common” and “least spoken.” However, the range is limited by repeated use of “spoken” and “language,” and several word combinations are unnatural or imprecise, such as “spoken a French regional language by their parents” and “a more observation.” Spelling and form errors, including “Occitian,” “spokenlanguage” and inconsistent capitalisation of language names, also reduce accuracy. Use precise reporting verbs and collocations, for example “were exposed to” or “were spoken to in,” and check the spelling of each language name.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt complex sentences using clauses and contrast markers, but many sentence structures are faulty, which sometimes makes the comparisons hard to interpret. For example, “adults who were spoken a French regional language by their parents” has an incorrect passive construction; write “adults whose parents spoke a regional language to them.” The opening sentence is a comma splice, and “it is evident that the there are” contains an unnecessary article. There are also errors in comparative phrasing and punctuation, including “less then” and the missing space after the semicolon in “habitually;however.” Aim for shorter, controlled sentences first, then add subordinate clauses with accurate verb patterns and punctuation.
