Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the chart’s subject and make relevant comparisons, including that Alsatian is highest among adults speaking to their own children and Corsican is lowest. However, the report is incomplete and several figures are inaccurate: Occitan’s occasional figure is about 1,065 thousand, not 1.8 million, and the highest childhood figure is not simply Occitan across both habits. The overview also omits the important contrast between the two childhood-speaking categories and the much lower figures for speaking to children. The response contains 118 words, below the required 150, which limits the detail and coverage. Add accurate comparisons across the categories and include more key data to address the task more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has a basic overall shape: an introduction followed by statements about the main highs and lows, so the reader can identify the topic. However, the ideas do not progress clearly through the chart’s two measures. The paragraph beginning “Overall this report reveals” combines an overview with specific figures, while the next paragraph shifts to the second chart without a clear transition. Linking phrases such as “Moreover,” “In addition,” and “As well as” are repetitive or awkward, and the final sentence introduces other languages without explaining their relative values. Organise the report into a clear overview and focused comparisons, grouping the childhood figures separately from the figures for adults speaking to their own children.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant chart vocabulary, including “number,” “highest,” “lowest,” “habitually,” and “occasionally,” and the language names are generally clear. However, the range is limited and several word combinations are unnatural or imprecise, such as “highest amount of adults,” “largest number of language,” and “spoken in middle level.” Repeated use of “number” and “spoken” also makes the report sound repetitive. Choose terms that describe people and quantities accurately, such as “the largest group” or “approximately,” and use verbs like “spoke” or “used” where appropriate. More precise vocabulary for comparing figures would help communicate the chart’s patterns clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts several sentence forms, including an opening sentence with a relative clause and sentences beginning with “Overall” and “In addition.” However, grammatical errors are frequent and sometimes make relationships between ideas difficult to follow. For example, “the highest amount of adults … were Occitan” has faulty agreement and sentence construction, while “the smallest number … were Corsican” repeats this problem. The sentence “the other languages … was spoken” also has subject–verb disagreement. Commas after introductory phrases are often misplaced, and some sentences are fragments or awkwardly joined, as in “As well as, the smallest number…”. Practise complete comparison sentences with accurate agreement and punctuation.
