Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the two charts and give an overview that Alsatian and Occitan are prominent, with the other languages lower. However, the report only partially captures the data and includes a major misreading: the second chart concerns adults speaking to their own children, not teenagers, as stated in your introduction and overview. Some comparisons are also inaccurate or unclear. For example, Alsatian was spoken habitually by about 600,000 adults and occasionally by about 240,000, rather than falling from one figure to the other; Occitan’s occasional figure is about 1,065,000, not simply “almost double” its habitual figure. The claim that the remaining languages were spoken by almost the same number also overlooks meaningful differences. Select and report the main comparisons more precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs beginning “To begin with” and “Further.” This gives the reader some sense of how the information is organised. However, progression within paragraphs is not always clear, and several sentences combine figures or ideas in a confusing way. The overview’s “Followed by the Breton” is an incomplete sentence, while “Remaining all three regional languages” does not clearly signal how the figures compare. Linking phrases such as “In contrast” are used, but the contrast is not fully explained. Group the first chart’s habitual and occasional figures clearly, then move to the second chart, using explicit comparisons and references to avoid repetition and ambiguity.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “bar charts,” “habitually,” “occasionally,” “dramatically decreased,” and “in contrast.” These attempts help convey comparisons, but the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, sometimes making the meaning difficult to follow. For instance, “teach a … language” does not describe speaking it to children, and “languages spoke by … parents” is not a natural way to describe the chart. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “illustate,” “languagues,” “Alastian,” and “populer.” Use precise chart-reporting expressions such as “the number of adults who spoke” and “the figure for occasional use,” and check spelling and word forms carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, including a comparison with “while” and a contrast introduced by “In contrast.” However, control is inconsistent, and errors in sentence construction, agreement, and verb forms frequently make statements hard to interpret. Examples include “Alsatian and Occitan were the two languages which was used,” where the verb does not agree with the plural subject, and “Remaining all three regional languages … were spoke,” which has an unclear construction and incorrect passive form. The overview fragment “Followed by the Breton” also lacks a complete clause. Practise building complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and use consistent past-tense forms such as “were spoken” when describing the chart.
