Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
The response recognises that the visuals compare five regional languages and attempts to report figures from both charts, so it is broadly on topic. However, the task is not accurately or clearly fulfilled: the opening calls the visuals a “table” and describes children rather than adults, and there is no clear overview of the main pattern. Several figures are misreported or confused. For example, Breton is given as 250 for habitual speech (about 260), while Corsican is stated as 20 rather than about 85; in the second chart, Occitan is said to reach “1.5,” although it is about 250, and Breton is described as increasing by 400, though the figure is about 90. Identify the two measures correctly and summarise the key contrasts before giving selected accurate figures.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is a basic attempt to organise the report into an introduction, discussion of each picture, and a conclusion. Phrases such as “On the other hand” and “In other picture” also show an effort to connect ideas. However, progression is difficult to follow because the comparisons are not consistently organised and the references to “first picture” and “other picture” do not clearly identify the measures. The final sentence repeats the idea that figures “increase and decrease” without summarising a meaningful overall pattern. Some sentences run together, while full stops and commas are used inconsistently. Group the information by chart or by language, use clear paragraphing, and make each comparison explicit so the reader can follow the report.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses some relevant topic vocabulary, including “language,” “rate,” “spoken,” and the names of the five languages, which helps establish the subject. However, the range is limited and several word choices or spellings make the meaning unclear, such as “spically occasion,” “habiatuaaly,” and “reached to 1.5 date.” “Rate” is also repeatedly used where the chart reports numbers of adults, and “increase and decrease” is applied without clearly describing the data. These issues make the report imprecise. Use chart-reporting vocabulary such as “number,” “figure,” “approximately,” “higher than,” and “fell to,” and check spelling and collocations carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts to form connected sentences and use comparison structures, for example, “On the other hand” and “If we see in first picture.” However, grammatical control is inconsistent, and errors often make relationships between ideas hard to understand. Examples include “This table show,” “the number of parents spoke,” and “the language occitan to spoken,” which show problems with agreement, verb forms, and sentence construction. Articles and prepositions are also frequently missing or misplaced, and punctuation does not reliably separate complete ideas. Practise accurate simple sentences first—for example, “About 600,000 adults spoke Alsatian habitually”—then add controlled comparisons using “whereas” or “compared with.”
