Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the two chart topics and include an overview, noting that Occitan is highest in the occasional-speaking group and Corsican is generally among the lowest. However, the overview contains important inaccuracies: Occitan is not highest in both childhood-speaking categories, since Alsatian is slightly higher for habitual speech, and Corsican is not the lowest in every comparison. Several figures are also misreported: Breton habitual speech is about 260,000, not close to 400,000; Occitan spoken to children is about 250,000, not 350,000; and the other childhood figures are not all below 200,000. To strengthen the report, compare the three series accurately and select the most significant contrasts rather than making broad claims such as “other three” being very low.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs covering childhood speech and language use with children. This gives the reader some sense of how the information is grouped. However, progression is weakened by unclear or repetitive linking, including “Overall,” “First and foremost,” “On the other hand,” and “By constrast,” which do not always show the precise relationship between the data. The overview also mixes comparisons with an unclear statement about adults preferring Alsatian. Some sentences are difficult to follow, such as “Other three had very low figure likely under 200 thousands.” Group the figures by chart series, use clear comparisons between languages, and ensure each linking phrase accurately signals the next point.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant chart vocabulary, including “number,” “figure,” “highest,” “lowest,” and “in thousands,” so the topic is generally identifiable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or repetitive, such as “number of adult prefer to spoken,” “had normal and near by figure,” and “language had a highest number.” Spelling errors, including “lanaguage,” “childern,” “thoudands,” and “constrast,” also reduce precision. Aim for standard reporting phrases such as “the figure for,” “stood at,” and “compared with,” and use “adults” and “languages” accurately. More precise vocabulary would help distinguish habitual speech, occasional speech, and transmission to children.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts both simple and longer sentence forms, and the reader can usually identify the intended comparisons. However, grammatical control is inconsistent, with frequent errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “The bar charts compares” should use a plural verb, while “Alsatian and Occitan language was held 600 thoudands numbers” has problems with agreement and sentence structure. The phrase “number of adults who speak … in that Alsatian language 400 thousands number” is also incomplete as a grammatical comparison. Use a reliable pattern such as “The figure for Alsatian was approximately 400,000,” and check subject–verb agreement, singular/plural forms, and complete clauses. Varying sentence structures is useful, but accuracy should come first.
