Number of adults (in thousands) whose parents spoke a regional language to them in childhood
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The bar chart compares the number of French adults when they were children their parents spoke a french regional languauge to them and the number of adults who speak to their own children in a French regional language.
Overall, the number of adults whose parents spoke regional language them in their chilhood and the adults speak to their own children, mostly used regional langues is Alsatian, and the least used regional language is Corsican.
In regional language where parents spoke to adults in their childhood, we have two bars indicating spoken habitually or occasionally. Alsation and Occitan have almost same spoken numbers around 600,000 in habitual, while in occasionally speaking Occitan exceed usage far more than Alsatian with almost a difference of a million in number. We also have Breton, Creole and Corssican with around 300,000, 100,000, and slighlty lower than 100,000 in spoken habitually respectively, and in occasionally the Breton has around 400,000 while Creole and Corsican slightly more than habitually spoken with a difference of 10,000.
In adults speaking to their own children, we have Alsatian having the highest number of speaking in regional language of 400,000 with Occitan following below it with number of 250,000, and Breton, Creole and Corsican all fall under 100,000.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the two measures and include an overview, noting that Alsatian is prominent among languages passed on to children and Corsican is generally least used. You also select relevant comparisons, such as Occitan’s high occasional-use figure and Alsatian’s 400,000 speakers addressing their own children. However, the overview is not fully accurate: Alsatian is not the most common language spoken habitually by parents (Occitan is slightly higher), and Occitan, not Alsatian, has the highest occasional figure. The comparison that Occitan exceeds Alsatian by “almost a million” is also overstated; the difference is about 825,000. Some figures are imprecise, and the final category is only broadly described. A more precise overview and clearer comparisons across both charts would strengthen the report.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for the two charts. This makes the main stages of the report easy to follow, and phrases such as “while” and “with… following below it” help signal comparisons. However, some links between ideas are awkward or unclear, particularly “Overall, the number of adults… and the adults speak to their own children,” where the relationship between the two measures is difficult to follow. The long third paragraph also combines several languages and comparisons in one sentence, making the information feel crowded. Use shorter comparison sentences and clearer references to the two groups of figures to make progression more controlled.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “habitually,” “occasionally,” “highest number,” and “difference,” and the reader can generally understand the comparisons you intend. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or repetitive, such as “spoken numbers,” “in occasionally,” and “number of speaking in regional language.” These reduce precision in a report that depends on describing categories and quantities clearly. There are also spelling errors in “languauge,” “chilhood,” “Alsation,” “Corssican,” and “slighlty,” alongside inconsistent capitalisation of “French.” Aim for standard chart phrases such as “the number who spoke the language occasionally” and check spelling and proper nouns carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast with “while” and a relative clause in the opening. Meaning is usually recoverable, but some sentence structures are faulty. For example, “the number of French adults when they were children their parents spoke…” lacks a clear grammatical connection between the adults and their parents’ speech. In the overview, “adults speak to their own children, mostly used regional langues is Alsatian” has problems with clause structure and agreement. Article and preposition patterns also need attention, as in “spoke regional language them” and “in occasionally.” Build sentences around clear subjects and verbs, and check agreement and articles when describing each group.
