IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 4.5)

Nowadays, stress is more common problem in our society. Every person is disease like stress, dipression and many other problems that can lead a person to the serious diseases. Stress is more common nowadays because of the young generation because they are self defence and cannot proctect their parents. I have a mixed opinion on this topic.

In our societies, every person of the society can be lead to the stress as compared to the generation in the past they was under pressure but not lead to the stress and stay happy with their own and with their families but today there is a young generation that donot know this stress what is it. There is a big cause of stress that is social media that play an bad role in this disease. The impact of the social media is on our young generation as they totally depent on their mobiles and stress their parents and the other member of the society.

For example, i saw a person lead to the stress due to his bad son as it enter the bad friendship and regret his father charity. He lead to the stress and after some time he died after one week.

In conclusion, if we all struggled in resolving this problem we remove this bad habit from our society and make our societies and country neat and cleaned without this bad disease. If we remove this by our hardwork and struggle hospitals remain empty and death rates can be reduced as compared to the today rate.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You introduce the topic and state, “I have a mixed opinion,” and you offer a relevant point about social media and pressure on young people. However, the task asks you to discuss both views and give your own opinion, and these parts are only minimally addressed. The past-generation view is mentioned, but the claim that people “were under pressure but not lead to the stress” is not explained or supported. Your own position also remains unclear: the conclusion focuses on removing stress rather than saying whether people today experience more stress or whether this is exaggerated. The personal example is relevant in principle, but its connection to the two views needs to be made explicit and developed with clearer reasoning.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

Your response has a basic overall shape, with an introduction, a main discussion, an example, and a conclusion. This gives the reader some sense of direction. However, ideas are not arranged into a clear progression: the first paragraph moves from stress to disease and then to young people, while the second combines past generations, social media, and family pressure without clearly separating the two views. Linking phrases such as “For example” and “In conclusion” are present, but they do not resolve these connections. Some references, including “they” and “this,” are unclear. Organise the essay into distinct paragraphs for each view, then add a paragraph or clear concluding statement explaining your own position and how the example supports it.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “stress,” “pressure,” “social media,” and “generation,” so the subject is generally identifiable. However, the range is basic and repetitive, and several inaccurate word choices or collocations make meaning difficult to follow. For example, “Every person is disease like stress” does not express a clear idea, and “stress their parents” appears to mean that young people cause their parents stress. Spelling errors such as “dipression,” “proctect,” and “depent” also reduce clarity. Aim to use precise phrases for causes and effects, and check word forms and spelling. More accurate expressions such as “experience stress,” “face pressure,” and “rely heavily on social media” would help communicate your ideas.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response relies mainly on simple sentence patterns, with a few attempts to connect ideas using clauses such as “because” and “as.” However, grammatical errors are frequent and sometimes distort meaning. Examples include “they was under pressure,” “a big cause … that is social media that play,” and “if we all struggled … we remove,” where agreement and verb forms are not controlled. Articles and sentence construction are also problematic in “Stress is more common problem” and “Every person of the society can be lead to the stress.” Several long sentences join multiple ideas without clear grammatical boundaries. Practise building accurate simple sentences first, then combine them with one controlled subordinate clause; check subject–verb agreement, articles, and consistent verb forms when revising.
